10 lb baby at 36 weeks?

Hi guys,

So I don't post much but read the posts on this board almost everyday.  I love it because everyone seems to be going through the same things as me and makes me feel normal :)

However something happened today that I don't recall happening to anyone else and I am hoping for some supportive feedback as I am STRESSED OUT.  My fundal measurement was 38.5 at my 34.5 week appointment so my Dr scheduled my for an ultrasound at todays appointment (today i am 36.5 weeks, fundal measurement 43).

So everything looks good on the ultrasound, except she estimated the baby to be 9lb14oz!!! (It was my Dr, not a tech!) So I still have a month to go and I have almost a 10lb baby! (She said it is plus or minus 20% so could be only 8 lbs, and I thought yeah could also be 12!)

She said to hope to go into labour at 38 weeks, she will also strip my membranes to get things going at that time, and said "don't worry we won't let you labour too long, we will do a c-section if required"

I've never heard of anything like this -  experiences??

I'm not diabetic, did both tests!  Although I am plus size, and she says bigger girls tend to have bigger babies..

  • Those measurements are notoriously shady. I've heard many more of them being wrong than being right. I also don't think there is a connection with mom's size. I've seen some little women with big ol babies and plus sized women with smaller ones. I personally would push to go into labor on your own and push as long as possible as long as there aren't complications. But I really want to avoid an unnecessary c/s, it's really your call but I would ask what risks there are for letting LO bake a little longer.

  • After about 30 weeks ultrasounds aren't really all that reliable for sizing so I don't know if I would worry that much. Its possible that you are retaining water and that is why your fundal height is so high. I bet it won't be a big deal. I have heard if a baby is too big compared to a mom they might do a c-section but I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I honestly wouldn't be worried...at 38 wks w/ my 2nd the tech kept saying how big she was, going to be over 9 lbs...kid was 7 lbs 14 oz. My first they said the same thing...7 lbs 11 oz. They almost always are off IMO.
However, even if the baby is a big one, I'm sure everything will be fine...our bodies are pretty amazing. I was 10 lbs and my mom is/was a smaller woman, had no problem.  A friend of mine has had 2 over 9 lb kiddos and is TINY...vaginal births for her too. It can happen!

  • My nurse was just telling me at my last appt that someone was told her baby was 11 lbs! When the baby actually came it was only a little over 8 lbs. So they can be way off. I go in on Wednesday for my ultrasound and I am nervous about the size they will tell me. Obviously, it can be off but will still make me worry...

  • Those measurements are way off all of the time. Your doc should know that. I think it's really shady that she's already mentally prepping you for a csection.

  • Like the others have said those tests are known for being way off. Also your doctors comment about plus sized women is false. I'm plus size and my first baby was 6lbs 3oz. This baby is measuring in the 45 as far as size goes. Not to mention there are plus size mommies in a group with me and they have all had normal sized babies. Do not go through a csection unless you need to our want it. My husband was 10lbs 12oz and his tiny mom pushed.him out without issue. Go with your gut and try not to stress out.
  • Thanks everyone for the feedback!
  • At my doctor's appointment today, I measured 35 weeks (I'm 29 weeks), so my doc is sending me for an ultrasound tomorrow.  I'm kind of freaked out!  With DD, I had an ultrasound toward the end of my pregnancy and they predicted that she'd be in the high 8's.  I was induced 2 days before my due date and DD was 9 lbs 1 oz, so they were pretty much on target.  I'm curious to see what the ultrasound shows tomorrow.

  • Lurking. Even if lo is 10 lbs, it's doable. All mine were big (and I'm not plus size, but tall). DD4 was 10lbs 12oz delivered at 41 weeks, vaginal delivery, no tearing, no drugs. It's completely possible.
  • Coulda wrote this post myself :)

I am 32 weeks and measuring 36 right now- just had a growth scan on Monday and baby was measuring in the 76th percentile. Which is in between Big and Normal.

Im short 5'2'' and a voluptious- so dont know if that has anything to do with it !

But good luck -I would take the C-section in a heart beat :)

    Ditto this.

I hate that they even do the growth U/S unless there's a true reason to be concerned with size because more often than not they only end up having a negative impact.

Just know that due to the fact that size estimates are unreliable (and other things, like a doctor can't tell you what size baby you can safely deliver, but in most situations your body won't grow a baby that's too big for you) ACOG recommends against inducing or performing a C/S based on size estimates.  It's not a valid medical reason on it's own to mess with the natural process.

Just try to ignore it and focus on positive thoughts :)
