2nd Trimester

Bikinis While Pregnant

I'm headed to the Dominican Republic next month for 10 days.  At that point I will be apprx. 26 weeks.  In anticipation of the trip I ordered 2 maternity bikinis.  I hate them!  They feel uncomfortable on my belly and IMO have an odd fit.  I have never really worn 1 pieces and they make me feel matronly (no offense to those who wear them).

Although I am sure this question has been asked before, what are your opinions regarding a 6.5 month pregnant woman in a bikini?  I'm 5'9 and currently weigh 145.  I'm all belly and from behind you can't tell I'm pregnant and I still don't have any stretch marks or cellulite.   All of my bikinis still fit but being a FTM I don't know what type of weight gain will occur in the next 4 weeks.  If it matters my weight gain has leveled off and I haven't gained anything in weight in the last 3 weeks.

I don't want to rely on wearing my bikinis and then a week before the trip realize I can't fit into them or they might be offensive to those around me.  Thoughts?

  • Seriously? Wear whatever is most comfortable when the time comes and anyone who is "offended" can shove it! You're pregnant, not 500lbs and hairy...

  • I wore my regular bikini when I was 8 months pregnant with DS. Granted, it was only to our local outdoor pool, but none of my other suits fit at the time and I sure as heck wasn't going to invest in a maternity suit at that point! I actually felt pretty cute!

  • i was having the same thoughts about our upcoming trip too, i say go ahead and wear bikini, as long as you feel comfortable be proud of that bump LOL, and like PP stated it's not like you are grossly over weight you are just pregnant

  • I was on vacation a month ago, and although I always wear bikinis, I felt a little weird because of my belly.  I felt like the bottom fit really low in the front because of my belly, and I spent most of the time I had it on, tugging on it.  I also brought a tankini and felt a lot less exposed.

  • Thanks ladies!  I normally don't worry about things like this because I workout pretty hard to maintain a certain look.  However, when researching alternatives to maternity swimsuits I ran across a few comment sections and people's comments were just brutal regarding pregnant women in bikinis.  It was quite disturbing.

I am all for women wearing bikinis during pregnancy. I can't imagine trying to get in and out of a one piece to pee all the time!

  • My cousin went on a cruise when she was 7 or 8 months preg and wore a regular bikini the whole time. She looked GORGEOUS! Everyone complimented her bump and made her feel super sexy even being so pregnant. :) If my legs were a little more toned up, I would rock a regular bikini too lol. Personally, I think pregnancy is a beautiful thing and that belly should be out and proud! But everyone is different and its all with what your comfortable with. No one is going to look at you weird for wearing a bikini if thats what your worried about. Most gals I think will smile and don't be surprised when getting compliments :) As for the weight gain, you won't gain a ton in the next 4 weeks. Maybe 4 lbs tops if your eating write and exercising, possibly a little less.

  • I wore my regular bikini all summer last year. I guess I was about 31 weeks when we went on our big end of summer trip and I was rocking it. I think pregnant women in bikinis look great. wear whatyou feel comfortable in!

  • I bought a maternity tankini the other day because it was on clearance at Target and I wanted to start swimming laps at the gym- I hated it. The bottoms were all weird, and the top was uncomfortable. I tried on my pre-preggo bikini and it fits fine- granted I've got the mother load of cleavage now but I had that before... It's all about what you're comfortable in, I went on my honeymoon to a Sandals resort and was quite offended by a lot of people in their choice of swimsuits and NONE of them were pregnant...

  • If you can do it, more power to you. Enjoy your vacay.
  • Regular bikini would be fine; as long as it fits.  I wasn't able to comfortably wear my pre-pregancy bikinis on my last vacation because my boobs had grown so much.

I did buy a maternity bikini that i liked, got a great deal on it.  But unfortunately, I have to cancel my upcoming trip to Curacao.

  • Last time I was pregnant I wore a regular bikini at an all women work event when I was really big. I was also worried but everyone on the bump said go for it and I was glad I did!

  • I had 3 friends pregnant last summer and they all had a negative opinion about pregnant ladees in bikinis until it was 102 here for nearly a week. after that it was hard getting them out of them. Be comfortable. Every ones always lookin at the greasy banana hammock wearin fools from europe aaaany ways, and I know when ever I see a little pregnant ladee comfortable with her bump I think its just terribly cute!!!!!!!! My ole man thinks a weirdo sometimes because always have to point them out.

  • Just like in Hawaii, ppl in the DR are on a permanent vacation. They see everything from 24 y/os in string bikinis to 60 y/os in speedos with a big hairy belly. No one is going to find a pregnant woman offensive.

I know a lot can happen in 4 weeks, but it probably won't be anything major. Just get whatever feels comfortable. you can always wear a wrap/sarong/tunic over top for walking around

  • I see no issue with a pregnant woman wearing a regular bikini! If you want to, go for it! I would if it wasn't snowing outside. :P

  • I did it on a cruise when I was 22 weeks with DS and will again at the end of the month and i'll be 24-25 weeks.  My regular 2 piece suits still fit so I'll wear them.....keep exercise hard till the day gets here and hope they still fit by the end of the week in Mexico :))  I don't think it's offensive by the sounds of your body.  I've seen a LOT worse!!  Wear a bikini and be proud!!!!

  • I have been wearing my regular bikini at the gym and also around my own pool. The way I look at is, if you're comfortable, who cares what others think?! Enjoy your trip and tan that bump!
  • Just make sure the slather on the sunblock.....wouldn't want a burnt bump.

I was never pregnant enough to be showing with either pregnancy in the summer, but had I been, I totally would've rocked a bikini.
