Am I crazy?

I'm thinking about buying a potty chair. Not because I think G can be "trained" yet, but we *always* know when he is pooping, so I almost think it makes sense to get a potty chair and sit him on it when he is. I know daycare can't be expected to do this so it would just be up to us to read the signs and get him on the potty at home, so maybe it would be confusing? I really don't intend to start "real" potty training until at least two years.

My Mom says I was potty trained at 11 months, but my Grandma says everyone around me was just trained to sit me on the potty regularly. I guess this would sort of be the same thing?

Re: Am I crazy?

  • We bought ours when DD was 1 just so that she was used to seeing it and talking about it. She would join me in the bathroom and sit on it even though she didn't really begin to use it until she was 2.

  • We've been sitting E on the potty since she was about 4-5 months old. We didn't do "infant toiled training" -- it wasn't at all intense or forced. I simply sat her on the toilet (the normal toilet, not an infant potty) at times when I knew she was likely to poop or when I saw her grunting. It worked very well for us until she learned to crawl and walk. Now she hates the potty because she doesn't like to be held still. I'm letting her take a break, but I hope to get back to it soon.

  • I am going to buy one between 15 and 18 months depending on how her personality is. Right now after she poops she will eventually say poop if you don't notice it right away so I'm irrationally hoping that means she'll be easy to potty train! We started my son on the potty around 16 months and we were able to get him to pee on it if we stayed on top of him but he wasn't completely potty trained as in he would get up and go by himself when he had to go until he was 3. He had a lot of changes going on because of stuff with my ex who was too lazy to work on potty training in that time so I partially blame that. My brother and I were both potty trained by 18 months.
  • Thanks for asking this question. I was wondering when would be the right time to buy a potty. I guess it's now!

I'm piggybacking off of this, because we did the same with Nora.  She would potty on the chair multiple times a day before she was too mobile, but it was all about timing on my part (not her knowing when to potty).  She could care less about sitting there right now.  I'm thinking about trying here in a couple of months, because she says "poop, mommy" as she is pushing it out.

  • We got a potty chair early on for playing with and talking about and I am now so damn tired of it floating around my house. I think it already used up my potty training excitement.

  • I don't think it is a bad idea. It would get him use to sitting on the potty and not be afraid of it. My daughter goes into the bathroom with me will close the door behind her and then gives me toilet paper. I think its a start.
