What to Expect When You're Expecting Movie Question (sp)

I have this movie on the way from Netflix, but I've heard that maybe there's a sad scene involving birth in the movie.  Is that true?  What does it pertain to?

Re: What to Expect When You're Expecting Movie Question (sp)

  • There is a sad scene, but it may not be as sad or make you worry now that you are as far along as you are into your pregnancy.

After watching it during 1st tri, DH and I really wished we hadn't at that point but I think I would've been ok watching it now.

ETA: I also think it would depend on your TTC history...

  • I havn't watched it but have heard that one of the couples MC
  • There is one scene that involves a m/c. It's definitely a tear jerker- but I think it's good that they show this b/c it is something that effects so many women, but isn't really talked about much outside of The Bump in my experience.

I just watched that movie on the plane this weekend. I did skip past that scene bc I didn't want to cry on the plane- but I've watched the movie plenty of times before. There are also a lot of really happy parts that I cried at. I'm a big ball of emotions!

  • I think they may be referring to one of the moms having to have an emergency c-section...it's not overly graphic or even very long. It didn't bother me at all.

  • It does bring up a miscarriage in the first tri, I think it was around 12 weeks. I was glad they addressed it, she was 1 in 4 pregnant women, but it was sad.

I thought it was pretty honest and open, and pretty truthful (except for the twin lady, gag me - she was there for humor).

  • I watched it during first tri and wished i hadn't. there is a m/c scene and a scary c/s scene. I literally ran out of the theatre crying. If you're having a hormonal surge lately I would highly suggest waiting a few more months until after LO is here.

Ah... I was worried that this might be the case.  At what point in the movie is it?  Do they show a lot leading up to the C/S or is it more just like... you know it's a scary situation, they go to C/S, and then everything is fine?  Is the mom in labor and then has to go for the C/S?

I also hadn't heard about the miscarriage part either :(

I remember people talking about having some trouble with the movie when we were newly pregnant :/

  • Yes there's a sad scene, but like PP said you're pretty far along now so it probably won't bother you. I really liked the movie and thought it was funny. Is it gonna win an Oscar? Probably not, but expecting couples can really relate to it so my SO and I enjoyed it. On the flip side, my friends who aren't pregnant/have never been pregnant didn't think it was that funny lol.... one even said it pushed her farther away from wanting to be pregnant!

The miscarriage part was pretty brief and even as someone who has had a m/c, I didn't think it was that bad.  I actually was not a fan of the way they addressed it.

The c/s is a few minutes of scary things that can go wrong during and after labor and delivery but ***spoiler***  everything ends up just fine.  If you have major anxiety about labor and delivery, especially a c/s it might get to you but I don't think it is that bad.

Overall it is a super cute movie and DH actually liked it as much, if not more than I did.

  • That part is at the very end, it's quick and everything's fine. Seriously it's not that bad and I'm a paranoid freak (I won't watch 'A Baby Story' if it involves previous late loss or other horror stories) I was also glad they represented the MC mommies. It happens and they deserve a part in the story of moms everywhere. For the most part it's a funny representation of the things that happen during pregnancy, the annoying people who somehow escape normal prego symptoms, even the dads and how it affects them.

If you want, start fast forwarding when the young couple talk about how she's getting a little belly while hanging out in her room for a few min, and right after Elizabeth Banks gives birth for a few min.

  • Thanks ladies!

  • There's a miscarriage that I thought they handled really, really well in the movie - it's unfortunate, but fairly common in early pregnancy and I think it would have been a mistake to not show that side. I saw it when it came out and thought it was a great movie & even DH enjoyed it a little.
  • I'm not sure what they could be referring to aside from the m/c.

yep, this. The m/c part was really sad. Tear-jerker for sure.

  • There is a miscarriage later in one pregnancy and an emergency c-section for another. The miscarriage happens far enough along that she is "showing" or mentions showing just before it happens. Having had four miscarriages I was terrified to watch this movie so I asked a friend to tell me who it was and what happened so I was prepared. I'll do the same here. If you don't want to know stop reading.

    SPOILERS

Anna Kendrick's character loses her baby somewhat later in her pregnancy. She awakes to blood on her sheets and rushes to the hospital with her SO.  There isn't any dialog in the hospital and a somewhat melancholy music playing. She heads home, and essentially breaks up with her SO feeling they were only together for the baby. The movie follows the couple for the rest of the film as she handles her grief and he tries to understand her grief and handle his own as well. It ends on an up note with those two characters obviously together and happy, though not pregnant.

Elizabeth Banks character is very true to form throughout the film. She has an average pregnancy, but experiences what most of us do. They play it up, but it is an honest portrayal of passing gas, feeling hormonal, and the not so pleasant experiences of creating a child. During her delivery scene she changes her mind about an epidural (they handle this humorously) and her labor progresses to a point where the doctor feels a c/s is needed. The baby is delivered, very healthy and handed to the father who is beaming. Shortly after Elizabeth Banks looses consciousness and her husband is rushed from the room. The audience is kept with the father while he works through his fears by talking to his own father. It is stressful, but ultimately ends well with mother and baby happy and healthy.

  • I watched it about a month ago and thought it was a great representation of different ways people have babies and start families. Of course it made me cry - I'm pregnant! Some commercials make me cry. LOL Honestly, the happy parts of the movie made me cry more than the sad parts. And, as someone who had a miscarriage in early pregnancy, I'm glad they put that in there. Being pregnant, as we all know, isn't always rainbows and lollipops.

I didn't really think it was handled too well either - kind of glossed over the aftermath, not to mention her attitude leading up to the m/c...I just think to include something so serious, it should have been a little more developed as a story line...I'm not a huge fan of the movie in general though, so if that tells you anything...

  • There was a MC in the movie. I was not happy about it, having JUST gone through one. :(

I know a lot of women who've experienced MC's, even off The Bump, so it certainly can be something to expect when you're expecting, it's just pretty darn sad. I think it might be harder to get through Breaking Dawn I, and all its blood drinking, back breaking, fun.
