sippy/straw cup & schedule help

Im looking for some tips & tricks for introducing a sippy or preferably a straw cup.  Admittedly I haven't tried too hard because my daughter likes to play with the cups more than actually drink from it which makes a long meal time even longer.

I still nurse her twice a day and plan to stop sometime in the next week or two.  She currently gets 2 bottles during the day and nurses in the morning and at night.  Ideally Id like to only add one more bottle in once I am done breastfeeding and would like to have her start having a sippy of milk or formula with her breakfast.

also looking for some schedule help.  How did you eventually transition into 3 meals and a snack?  My daughter's schedule currently is:

7am - breastfeed

8am-breakfast

11:30am- 8oz bottle

1pm- lunch

4pm- 8oz bottle

6pm- dinner

7:30 pm breastfeed

Re: sippy/straw cup & schedule help

  • I introduced sippies as I transitioned to WCM.  I was only nursing in the morning, and DS's schedule is still pretty much the same now as your LO's current schedule (we give/offer him a milk sippy 4 times a day or when he asks for it).  I started with an afternoon bottle, then added in the morning/lunch bottle, and then breakfast after I weaned and had used up my stash.  The bedtime bottle was the last to go, as it was his only formula bottle and he was taking about 7oz as opposed to his 5oz BM bottles.   It took a little while for him to get the hang of a sippy, but the whole process was done within 3 weeks.

  • My DD couldn't figure out sippies either. But she did learn straw cups with some help from OT. We started with this one https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Juice-Bear-Teaching-Drinking/dp/B005RD66BC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1352216112&sr=8-1&keywords=honey+bear+straw+cup. You can squeeze it as they drink to so they get the idea that water/juice/milk comes out of the straw. A few days of that and she had the straw mastered. Now we use Thermos Fogoo straw cups because they are pretty indestructible.

We also had no luck with formula or BM in a cup. Are you ready to switch to milk? If so, I'd do milk in the cup and formula/BM in a bottle.

  • My guy couldn't figure out straws and took a long time to figure out sippies.  I see your LO's adjusted age is around 9 months.  That is a tad young.  They might just not be ready.  We finally got our guy to use these cups.  They are great because the handles are removable and the spout is silicone like  a bottle so it helped him adjust.
