Shower registry question

For those that had their shower, how many people shopped off your registry? Was it the majority? My shower is tomorrow and I think people are waiting until today to shop but I'm panicking bc not a lot has been bought off our registry and since I'm a FTM I will need to purchase a lot or return a lot. I don't want to sound ungrateful but if I get a lot of clothes I will prob try to return them to get things we need. Is it possible to return without a receipt? Oi......

Re: Shower registry question

  • I had my shower last Sunday and I was in the same situation. Only like 10 things were missing from my registry. But we ended up getting above and beyond what I expected. We still got a lot from our registry, people just didn't take it off the registry. Don't worry! :) And usually you can return without a receipt, they may just put it on a gift card.

Are you on BRU? The last few times I've bought for people, they're system wasn't terribly reliable about updating what was and wasn't purchased, so more may have been bought than you see. Also, I read a post yesterday that said their system was having problems because of the storm and the fact that their server is in NJ. Not sure how accurate that is, though.

Returning without a receipt depends on where you shop. Some places, like Target, will usually give you store credit no problem. I've heard BRU can be trickier if the stuff isn't on your registry. You can always just add the stuff to your registry after its purchased then try to return it for store credit.
  • I admit, I peeked at my registries before my shower.  People definitely waited until the last minute to shop.  Also, I did get a lot of stuff from my Target registry that didn't get taken off the registry.  I don't know if people forgot to tell the cashier that it was for a registry or if there were any glitches.  Target was great about returning my duplicates, but it was awkward to open up duplicate gifts.  Somehow I got 5 sets of hooded duck towels!

  • Well...I had my shower last night and only 2 people got something from my registry =/ I still can't for the life of me figure out why people would seriously rather buy you something that you don't need, when there is a perfectly good list available of what IS needed. *sigh*

  • Thanks ladies. I know that even if it isn't off the registry and it's cute I will keep it but trying to gage what we will still need. I did register at BRU and the online registry has been down so who knows. Either way I'm excited to have my shower finally and see everyone!

  • My shower was October 20th and I was concerned about that too. My hostesses didn't send out invitations until October 10th and we live several hundred miles from Target and BRU (rural Texas) and as of the 19th about 3 things had been purchased off my registries.

However, my friends and family know how I am about checking things, and they went and bought the things I had placed on my registry, without checking it off my registry. Make sense? They wanted me to be surprised by my gifts. So, I spent the next day filling out Thank You cards and going on line to update my registry...

I got a lot of clothes, and I'm a FTM...however, I'm surrounded by people that have been having babies over the last couple years and I've learned that clothes are a good thing. I've seen my sister dress her daughter and then her daughter have a 'blow-out' before we could get to the car, and yet another one in the car. So, thats 3 outfits in less than 45 min. I've kept everything Big Smile

  • I am a little worried I'm going to get only clothing as well. And, to be honest, I feel super selfish for admitting that! I know that it is a huge blessing whatever anyone gets us, and I will be beyond thankful. I also know that babies need clothing. However, the more emotional and hormonal side of me wants to buy my daughter her clothing, I mean, after all, baby girl clothes are one of the cutest things in earth! It'd be much more "fun" to but clothes and cutsie things than practical things like bath tubs, pump parts and other gear!

  • It seemed like we got a lot of things off our registry at the last minute -- or, people would buy one thing from the registry and then add a cute outfit to it. We ended up getting most of what we needed. We really just have a couple bigger things (car seat base, bedding, baby monitors) left to buy ourselves. But, a couple people gave us cash too, so we really don't even have to spend much of our own money on those things. All in all, I was really grateful for everyone because I'm a FTM too and was kind of worried about having to buy EVERYTHING on our registry ourselves.

The only person that sort of annoyed me was my sister. She knows that we have really different taste (I'm pretty pretty preppy/conservative for clothes and she's much more out there), and bought ELEVEN outfits that she loved... ten of them, I'm returning. For the price of 11 outfits, she could have bought us something useful.

  • For my 1st baby a lot of people bought of my registry. Also we didn't get a ton of clothes either (which I preferred and is one of the reasons we didn't find out the sex), we actually got things we needed. I just had my shower today and I was told that my BRU registry is down because of the hurricane so I got a lot of gc's...which I am very excited about :)

  • I was quite upset at how many people did not buy off our registry because we are first time parents as well. We got a bunch of clothes and then a few things here and there off our registry. Luckily my in-laws already had bought our crib and dresser for us. My mom and her husband bought us the travel system. I was hoping someone would get us the pack-n-play but nobody did.

I would not stress yourself right now about what people got you. I also do not think you should return a lot of clothes if you get them because from what I've been told babies go through a lot of clothing.

What we did was just go through the clothes and kept what we liked and then returned anything that wasn't our style. I know I did not have a receipt at Target and they still took one of the outfits that we returned I just got a gift card instead of cash back.

  • Most people at my shower waited to the last minute (same day for some) to purchase items off my registry.  I limited my registries to two stores only,  requested few items, and put gift cards on the list for both stores. Only half of the requested items were purchased but I received quite a few gift cards that allowed me to order the rest of the items from my own registries and have them delivered.  Unfortunately only my (mom, sisters, and aunts) disregarded registry info and purchased clothes because they were confident they knew what I needed. LOL

  • We created a universal registry that wasn't tied to just one store, but also told the visitor where these items could be purchased. About half of the items off the list were purchased by shower guests, another quarter purchased by DH and I. For some reason, no one ever wants to purchase the essentials like burping cloths and receiving blankets. We had a book shower, so some people also brought a book with their gift. Of course we got things not on the list, but they were cute/useful and we didn't end up returning anything.

I had my shower yesterday and about three people got something off the registry. I agree with what you said here.

  • You know I feel like I'm in the same situation. My shower's today, and it looks like only about 10 things have been bought off the registries and almost half of those are things people bought that weren't on the registry but were placed on it by them. So I'm worried that people are only buying like clothes and nothing that we really need. Problem is that my parents have gone crazy with getting clothes, too. So I'm worried that we'll be buried in clothes, and won't have the things we really need. Oh well. It is what it is. The bigger problem I'm having is knowing that MIL has waited until the last minute, but will still try to act like she's done a lot for us. She has so many excuses why she didn't get anything, and I know DH is upset, but he'll ignore it, and I'll be the one looking like a biotch.

  • Many people bought from our registry or were guided by it, some didn't.  It was honestly fun to be surprised by what the registry non-users gave us-- my former boss is a children's lit expert & mother of a little girl, so she had a blast picking out a couple of books & some boy clothes in different age sizes.  A friend let her two kids pick out a toy each & those are two of my very favorite gifts received.

And a dear friend included a gift card to my favorite liquor store-- that one had me all sorts of verklempt!

  • While we are on the topic of registeries... I am almost 34 weeks and have had 2 showers, both of which I got some great gifts (mostly off my registry!)  One of my registeries shows that someone purchased us a car seat (over a month ago!)... but the car seat was not gifted at either shower!  I am getting slightly anxious because obviously this is an important item to have and I wanted to install early just incase...  Should I just go buy a car seat and install now for piece of mind?  Or wait and risk it?
