B&W feedback for mom's who've delivered there?

Hello- I am a NH FTM but will be delivering at B&W (not by choice) by C-section (again- not by choice)  so looking for feedback on the experience etc.. Also helpful if any mom's have experience with their NICU that would be even better as baby will be having a stay there after delivery.  Working on setting up a tour but looking for feedback from moms who have delivered there :)

Thanks

  • I delivered there. Our experience was good and bad. We had an amazing L&D nurse, Lois, who I wouldn't have made it without. We also had a great NMW who decided she wasn't going to give up on me when my little guy decided not to move down to be delivered. I almost had to have a c-section, but with the help of the nurses and midwives there, I had a vaginal delivery. There is a nurse in recovery that's awful though- her name is Josephine and honestly, worst experience ever. I struggled with bfing and had latching issues and she was absolutely no help.

Overall the hospital is great, but do your homework on breastfeeding so you don't have to rely on the nurses at BWH for help, because they weren't that helpful. GL!

I also delivered at B&W (by C-section) and I had a similar experience regarding breastfeeding and the nurses.  I was very happy with my doctor and the nurses leading up to surgery and immediately after.  Overall I was happy delivering there, but I was very disappointed that the support for breastfeeding wasn't better.  The advice and level of support really differed from nurse to nurse.  There was one person in particular that I also thought was awful, but unfortunately I don't remember her name.  Despite that, I would deliver there again.

  • Thanks!  If I had a choice I would deliver at the local hospital a mile from my house but unfortunately we only have limited choices of hospitals due a condition with the baby that was discovered at 21 weeks.  I have to have a C-section and the baby WILL have NICU stay although right now it is too early to tell if it will be for a few hours or a few weeks so I was told to plan on pumping.  I am hoping that the NICU nurses will be supportive of giving him breast milk as opposed to formula.

  • We drove an hour to deliver at B&W and I am so happy we did! I had the most amazing experience. I wanted a non-medicated vaginal delivery and that is exactly what I got. The nurse only asked once if I wanted pain medication, and by hospital policy I had to speak with the anethesiologist. I only wore monitors during the check in process-they never asked me to wear them again.  Nurses Joelle, Kathleen and Elaine were in L&D and they were AWESOME. I also had Dr. Melanie Smith delivering the baby and she was great. As far as the breastfeeding comments above-as a first time mom I was very nervous about not being able to breastfeed. The attending nurses in recovery were "ok", (or maybe I was just real low on self esteem). HOWEVER, they do offer daily breastfeeding classes which are helpful and you can request a lactation specialist to come see you in your room. I saw Paula-the most encouraging, sweet, understanding person you will ever meet-and she was helpful too! I can;t say enough good things about B&W-everyone from the valet parking to food staff to medical personnel were all wonderful.

  • I have had numerous procedures done at BW, I have had a csection, a preterm delivery and an abdominal myomectomy there and the staff has always been great. they were very kind and considerate with the exception of one nurse but overall I would give them a 9 out of 10. they have a lot of services available that you can take advantage of. the only think is the parking becuz my husband stayed all 4 nights with me after my csection. but in my opinion BWH is the best hospital in Boston for womes reprodcutive issues, treatment and care. they really take care of the whole individual mind and body.
  • Thanks for all the replies!  We meet with our delivery team Monday and will tour B&W L&D and NICU and will also have some appointments at Children's and tour their CICU.  I appreciate everyone's insight!
