2nd Trimester

Anything that I can do for a wicked cold with all the symptoms?

Is there anything that I can do to ease my cold symptoms? I have been sick now for over two weeks, I got my husband sick, and right as I started to feel a little better, he gave it back to me. Argh.

I have a barking cough, wicked sore throat, headache, pressure in my head and chest, running nose, sneezing, the works. No fun!

Any suggestions are welcome :)

Thanks Ladies

  • Thanks. Your doctor said that it was ok to take medicine while pregnant? I need to go to the doctor, but I just moved and need to find a new one.

    Thanks for your help

  • My MW gave me a list of meds that were generally safe while pregnant. When I had a terrible cold 2 weeks ago, I took Tylenol Cold and Sinus a few times...the daytime and nighttime versions. It was on the safe list and it did help a little. The nighttime version especially helped me get some sleep.

  • I was really sick for two weeks in my first trimester.  Although my doctor gave me a list of safe meds, I was kind of scared to really take them.  I took Robittussin cough syrup at night before bed a few times, used Ricola cough drops, and had a warm humidifier going.  I took a lot of hot showers to help clear my nose too.  I also have asthma so I used an inhaler sometimes too.

  • If you've been sick for over two weeks, you might want to consider talking to a Dr about starting an antibiotic.

I've never used a neti pot, but I was going to suggest sleeping with a humidifier. Call your ob's office about safe medicine for a cold.

  • Neti pot or Hydrasense, gargle with salt water, honey lemon tea, steam facial, cough drops without analgesic and Tylenol.  I know many doctors say Sudafed or Tylenol Cold and Sinus are safe but I'm trying to avoid them unless absolutely necessary.  I've been pretty miserable myself.
  • If you have been sick that long, it sounds more like its gone from a viral infection to a bacterial and you need antibiotics. Remember that while your body is busy making a baby, all your energy is being given to baby first, you 2nd. So your immune system is worn down even before you get sick and bacterial infections are WAY easier to get at this point. My OB told me to take sudafed (make sure it is NOT the extended release though and only take 1 pill, not the recommend 2 at a time because its too high a dosage for baby). I also used vicks nasal spray, once spray in each side of the nose, once every 12 hours. They usually ok Afrin, but I found it WAY too harsh. My OB did not recommend any cough suppressants besides vicks balm because you don't want that stuff staying in your chest. You want it up and out. I was sick for 5 days and by that point I knew it was no longer viral, and bacterial had set in and the cough turned into bronchitis, which turned into phnemonia pretty darn quick. Also, the sinuses turned into a sinus infection so antibiotics were the only thing that would help me. They gave azythromyicin (z pack) and by the end of the 2nd day on it I was feeling MUCH better :)

  • Thanks for all the tips ladies. I just scheduled a doctors appointment to try to nip this thing before it gets any worse.

    Thanks again
