What kind of home do you have?

I always beat myself up over the  size of our home... we have a 1200 square foot condo and its really not that big. Its 1 bath and 2 bedrooms. I want 3 kids but dont know how we could do that here and we just bought this place. I always see on Facebook these other women I went to school with who have huge homes and I get kind of jealous. Before this condo we had a 2 bedroom apartment on the 3rd floor with no elevator, no garage, no in unit laundry etc... our condo has a garage, laundry and is on the 1st floor with a patio and a yard... so everyone, what kind of home do you have? An apartment, a condo, not much space, a lot of space? a big house? a mansion? lets hear it! I cant be the only one with a small space!

Re: What kind of home do you have?

  • We have a pretty big split-level with 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, den, dining room, and a garage that supposedly holds 2 cars (it doesn't).  We only have it because it's a parsonage and it came with the job.  Not all parsonages are as big as the one we're in.

  • Single family home. Older post WW2. Maybe 2k sq feet, 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths but really only 1.5. I am conflicted bc the family who owned the home from the time it was built, before us, raised a family of like 3 kids and lived here 50 years. I'm feeling like we've outgrown it after 8 years and Wes is only 1! But I love the tiny mortgage that we bought when dh's salary was 2/3 what he makes now, and I was still a student.

If he gets this job in TX, I've got my sights set on a few properties I'd like to check out. I'm all like O.O at the amount of house you can get down there for the money.

  • I think it has a lot to do with where you live. In the city, our home is pretty standard but I could easily get bummed out if I compared myself to friends who still live in my hometown.

We have a two bedroom, one bath apartment. The living room/dining room/kitchen is all open floorplan, which gives DD plenty of room to play. There's a big park a block away, so it's fine with me that we don't have a yard. We don't have a parking spot, but we have easy street parking. The one thing I would change is that I have to go down two flights to do laundry. That svcks in the winter.

I love in the same type of home you do. There are four of us and I hate how tiny our home is. We are looking for something bigger, but houses here are marked up really high. An affordable three bedroom is hard to find.
  • We own a townhouse. Pretty big yard, middle unit, 1.5baths, 4 bedrooms but one is DH's office and a balcony. Garage for one car, driveway holds two. Basement is finished. I like it a lot, but am sure we'll have it outgrown in about five years t the latest. It's a great starter home though. I am amazed...in Germany, we would not be able to afford this.

  • We have a tiny 800 sq foot two bedroom, one bath in a pretty cute suburb of LA. It has a real dining room, a full scale laundry room and a pretty big bathroom for the size of the house. Our bedroom and E's bedroom is tiny. The best part is the 8000 sq feet of yard. And we live on a private street with no neighbors across from us. It's an amazing thing to have in Los Angeles but it is TINY.

Our house is cottage style with no hallways. Each room has two doors so it flows into another room. You can walk through a door in the living room to our bedroom, through a second door in our bedroom to E's room, through a second door in E's room to the bathroom, through a second door in the bathroom to a space between the kitchen and dining room, the dining room is open to the kitchen and you can make a full circle and end up in the living room again. SO weird. The laundry room is added on (before our time) and so is the only room not in the loop.

It is hard sometimes having such a small house. With so much yard we do plan to add on a family room, powder room and a master suite someday. But we don't worry about it too much because we are one and done.

Yes! You can get a lot for the money down here. We are currently in a 2500sq ft home. 4bed 2.5bath 2 living areas. We are looking to move to a newer home, but they are all McMansions. I keep telling DH that I don't really want a BIGGER house, just one with less problems. The problem with a bigger house is that you have to clean it.  Tongue Tied

ETA: I have a question for those of you with basements. (No basements in TX because of the type of soil) Does the basement count in the square footage of the home. I watch a lot of House Hunters/Property Brothers and it doesn't look like it to me.

  • We live in a second from the end townhouse. 2000 sq feet, deck, walkout basement, 3 bed 2 full 2 half bathrooms. The kitchen is big, not like a typical townhouse kitchen. We have an open parking parking lot. MH and I grew up differently. Not having a garage is torture and I feel like we're living in a fishbowl/shoebox and want to move. MH thinks we're fine and could have another kid here.

  • We live in an early 1900's farmhouse on about 5 acres.  It was the original farmhouse for the land that we live on.  It's pretty small, I'm sure one day when the kiddos get older we will need to expand.  We recently did a massive overhaul on the downstairs and a few rooms upstairs.  It took FOREVER to complete the project, so I'm ok with not doing any renovations for a long time.

I used to get very jealous of my friends and their large, beautiful homes because I never thought I would live in the country, on a farm. Having lived here for close to 9 years I could never imagine living somewhere else.  Plus it's almost paid off!! I love being married to someone that is very budget savvy.

In real estate listings they don't count basements, closets, the opening for a stair case is only counted once.
  • We live in a 2 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath rowhome. It is fairly spacious, with a big dining room that I have separated into a dining and playroom. We have an unfinished basement for storage and a small deck out back. We're renting and it's fine for now, but once the new baby is 1-2 years old, we'll definitely be looking to move.

  • We moved in last year. It's 20 years old and we bought it from the original owners who built it themselves. It's around 2000 sq feet with three bedrooms and three bathrooms. It's a 1.5 stories with no garage. They did a lot of weird things when building the house that I'd love to fix. Two of the bedrooms are upstairs with a bathroom that you can only get to through one of the bedrooms, I dislike that. The kitchen is super small. I'd love to expand onto the back of the house and redo the kitchen and add a master suite.

  • We have a lovely home, but it?s not ours - we rent it. And when moving back to the UK we wont be able to afford anything like we have now.

I dont know who much floor space we have, but there are 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a lovely sunny kitchen, large lounge dining area, a balcony and a roof terrace. We have a parking space in the basement and lift. It?s recently been redone so looks and feels brand new and is soo easy to keep clean.

We live on the top - 5th - floor of a small appartment bloc and from my kitchen window I can see both the sea and the Belver Castle. From the lounge balcony I look across the city of Palma towards the mountains.

I can walk into Palma, or catch the bus which stops right outside.

I will really miss this place when we leave.

  • I live in a loft-style condo; it is 3 levels and ~1400 sq ft.  You walk into the main level that has a full bathroom and a kitchen/dining/living room all in one large area.  The downstairs is supposed to be the master bedroom with full bath, but we had it set up as a family room with pool table and sitting area before having Ronin.  We still have the pool table, but the other half of the room is now set up as R's room.  Eventually, we'll have to ditch the pool table, but it works for now.  The upstairs is a loft style bedroom that we use as our room.  It only has room for a bed, two nightstands, a desk, and a dresser.  Since R's room is so huge, we figure we could have 2 kids share that room easily.  My best guess is that we have about 5 good years in the condo, depending on when we have #2.  I have no desire to live in a house at this point.  My condo has a huge gym with tons of cardio equipment, a nice BBQ area, and two fire pits.  There is also a huge park and field for dogs to play across the street.

  • We own a townhouse in the suburbs in PA... 3 bedrooms, 1.5 baths, kitchen with dining area, and living room. We have unfinished space in the basement. Garage and driveway. About 1400 sq ft. total. My biggest wish is to have more than one living area so that we could have a TV/living room and then a separate playroom for all of G's toys. I can't stand living on top of all the toys all day long!

Our house is currently on the market and we want to move to a different area to be closer to family. We had been looking at much bigger single-family houses with big yards... but recently I've been trying to convince MH that if we get another townhouse when we move, we can afford for me to SAH which is my dreeeeaaaaaam. Plus I can't find a job so far anyways. And then we could also afford to have another kid (we can't afford 2 in daycare) and after the kids are in school I can go back to work and then we can get our bigger house.

  • Stupid bump has ate this like 5 times so if I get duplicate post that is why.

2500 sq ft bi-level home on a wooded lot in the burbs.  We have 5 bedroom, 3 baths.

We still own our old town home and rent it out.  Having a smaller home is not a bad thing and kids who share rooms become quite close.

  • We rent one unit of a triplex, so we have neighbours upstairs and neighbours downstairs.  We've got 3 bedrooms (one is downstairs, that's where BIL lives), a living room, office/cat room, (small) dining room and big but pretty crappy kitchen (with very little counter space and the cupboards and drawers drop bits of wood all over, etc.).  There's one bathroom with two doors, one to the hallway and one to our bedroom.  It's a very small, oddly shaped bathroom and the tub is in terrible, unfixable shape.  The kitchen and bathroom are definitely the drawbacks to our place, plus we're just tired of being that close to our neighbours, so we're itching to buy a home.  The living room is fantastic, though, and I love how huge our bedroom is.  We had Lily's crib and change table in there until her birthday and it wasn't cramped; in fact, the room feels way too big and empty without it.  I really want another big master bedroom wherever we move, because we want to be able to do the same thing with future babies.

OP, I know what you mean about being jealous of friends for their homes.  We were among the first of our friends to get married and most were still living with their parents and stuff, but then we went to teach in Colombia for two years.  By the time we came back, it seemed like everyone we knew had gotten married and/or bought a house.  I've been dying to get our own place, where we can make changes and make it a real home instead of always knowing that we're going to move and hopefully soon.

  • We rent so i guess its not exactly the same, but we just moved to a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom 2 level townhome. We are a corner unit which backs onto some wooded area.

The kitchen is small but bigger than usual for a townhome, the dining room and living room blend together. upstairs is the bedrooms and bathroom. The 1st and second bathroom are rather small but master is huge.  We have some storage space under the stairs and a few extra closets.

The rent is what we moved far, as i SAH so we cannot afford a high rent cost. When we do buy we will be looking for a 4 bedroom one level rancher.

  • we have a 2500sq ft. house however our upstairs is bigger than our downstairs b/c our bedroom is huge and over the garage.  So although it's a decent sq. footage our downstairs doesn't seem big enough. It's 4 bedroom 2.5 bath and it's enough to clean.  i'm happy when i can just clean the powder room downstairs.  lol  But I do hope to one day finish the basement but am reconsidering now after hurricane Sandy.  I'd be absolutely scared to death of the basement flooding as it already did once.

We live right in the city so it's actually kind of big compared to some of my other friends' places around here. We also have parking, central A/C and outdoor space, all of which is a huge bonus around here!  We don't necessarily need more space, even if we have one more child. And I am just soooo not ready for the burbs just yet.

  • We have a tiny 2 bedroom 1.5 bath house, with a full basement but it isn't finished. We are so unbelievably cramped right now that we need a new house bad, which is why I really hope everything works out and we get the house we are planning on because it is much bigger. We currently have an open concept living space which is great but it means our kitchen, living room and b's play area are all on top of each other and the clutter is getting to be too much.
I am kind if shocked when people say they feel cramped in a 2000sq ft house, but that is because we don't even have 1000 lol.

Am I calculating wrong, because that sounds huge to me! We live in a 300 square foot rental apartment which is considered big for this area. Three small balconies but no yard, and no parking so we don't have a car. Rent is 1,300/month. We could buy a condo of similar size or slightly larger and pay half that for mortgage, but we're holding off because we'd like to move to Canada for a few years before L starts school. I do love our neighborhood: lots of schools and hospitals nearby, huge parks, shopping, and just 20 minutes to the city by train.

It came with the man, so I didn't get a say. There are two pluses, one being that we are 28 and 36 and paid 110,000 for it because it was bought off family. It's almost paid off...and was appraised at 250,000. The second is that even though we are cramped, we will eventually buy the 3,000sqft, 3bdrm, plus apartment in shop, 4bthrm, my IL's had built with TONS of storage.....and our house will become rental property.

  • We own a single family, 2300 sq ft home in the burbs of PA. 3 bedrooms, 4 baths (2 half and 2 full). No basement, but a 2.5 car garage, sunroom, rec room, living room, dining room, kitchen. Open floor plan now that we are renovating. We recently put up a fence, so we have a backyard now. We also took out 1/2 our driveway (which took up our whole front of the house and could have fit 10 cars (no joke) and we made a front yard. We are doing lot of improvements and renovations to make this house what we want. We tried selling and we couldn't. Now we are here to stay. Since we've done the front yard and other renovations, I'm really loving our house.

I feel like the size of our house is perfect, but I wish our sunroom was a den/playroom instead. If that were the case I'd have minimal complaints about this place.

Now, not to say, I've definitely had my fair share of small spaces.  When DS was born, I lived in NYC in a one bedroom 800 sqft apt.  We eventually moved to a 2 bedroom apt when he was 5mo old.  We lived in that 1000 sq ft apt for awhile then ended up moving to my current city and rented a 3 bedroom apt for 8 months until we found this duplex on the market and snatched it up.  It was a lucky find since 5 bedroom condos are rare in the city.

It does not. My house is about 1000 sq ft, but we have a fully finished basement. 3 bedroom 1 bath upstairs of our ranch home. Basement has another bedroom, but it isn't considered a true bedroom since it doesn't have an egress window. We also have a half bath inside our laundry room.

  • We live in a single family home that was built in 1906. The lot is pretty small; about 100x60. The house is about 1300 sq feet and 2 bedroom, 1 bath. We have a 1/2 basement (unfinished) and a shed...no garage.  The rooms are very compartmentalized so it can feel a bit cramped. If the floor plan was more open then it would be a lot more comfortable for us.

  • Our last house (because I'm still mourning the sale) was an adorable yellow ranch on 5 acres with a horse barn. 1100 sf. 2 bed/1 bath. Hardwood floors that we made/installed throughout. Big 2 car garage that could fit DH's giant diesel. Huge front porch and back deck. Blue shutters. Giant backyard with about 20 mature trees. Half of it was fenced for the dog. Black wood fencing for the yard/bard lots. One lane country road. We put so much work into the property. I miss it dearly. We've been gone a month, and I'm still not over it (but I was over the commute to work and upkeep of 5 acres!).

Our new house is 2600 sf (incl a basement that's half finished/half storage & utility area). 4 bed/2.5 bath. It's in a nice subdivision in a really nice town. Nice, flat backyard. I'm ready to start updating the finishes, but I think we're going to go slow again like we did with the last house and start sometime after the new year ('cause I'm apparently not happy unless my place of residence is under construction in some way or another!). The garage and laundry room are much smaller, and I'm missing my big spa tub in a bad way, but it's a beautiful home, and I know that I'll grow to love it just as much as the last Smile *I get way too attached to real estate.* It should also gain value and sell very easily when we decide to move someday.

I guess the size isnt so bad, its more of the layout that is an issue. the living room dining room kitchen are too open and then theres a small hallway that goes to 2 bedrooms and that is cramped up into one space. I need to figure out how to separate the living space better.  We also live in a HCOL area so we picked this place because it is the absolute best we can get in this amazing school district and thats important to me. Our building is GREAT. We only have 3 other neighbors. Its not bad at all.. I just wish we had more space/storage... this place has no storage, but we do have a little closet in the garage for storage area. but none actually IN the unit.

We have a 4500 sq ft house, 4 bedrooms, 6.5 bathrooms, a finished basement and a pool. The house was built in the '80's and definitely looks it, it's very contemporary with an open floor plan.

Liz, I'm coming to live with you!

3 people in 300 sq ft? I would kill DH being in such close proximity all the time. A bedroom is yours anytime!

I always beat myself up over the size of our home... we have a 1200 square foot condo and its really not that big.

I was thinking the same thing, I can't imagine 1200 sqft feeling small but then I started thinking if it is a two storey or a 1.5 storey, then ya I get it feeling cramped. Or a bad layout! I just keep thinking of 1200 sqft bungalow and to me that seems pretty big! I guess it is just hard to invision what the house actually looks like just by saying its size! I guess this is why I shouldn't judge!

haha its actually 1160 square feet. sometimes an open floor plan makes the house feel smaller cause it all blends together. I dont know! Its a one story condo. I have to figure out some creative ways to divide the space.

We have a small bungalow, about 2000 sq ft including finished basement. 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, open kitchen/dining/living area on the main floor, and large family room downstairs. Single attached garage.

It is much smaller than the norm in our circle of friends, but we very much enjoy our tiny mortgage and think it's more than enough space for us, for now. We have made good use of space and are pretty organized and decluttered, so I don't feel cramped at all. There are a few things I would like to change about the layout (front entry/mudroom, kitchen, and upstairs bathroom) eventually but we don't have plans to move anytime soon.

Sometimes I wish that we had something bigger/grander, but DH and I actually built our house ourselves from the ground up (didn't contract it out, actually did the work ourselves), so we are quite attached to it even though it isn't our dream house.

    2000 sq/ft is a small bungalow?

2000 sq/ft is a small bungalow? I am definitely closer to living in my car then...

  • I understand now. I love bungalows, but they are usually tiny(but so cute!) We look at several when we looking for our home. Having a finished basement would definitely give you more room. Bungalows usually have the cutest little front porches.
