4 year old behavior problems?

One of my mommy friends asked me to post this on her behalf. I don't have children yet, but will in a matter of weeks (see ticker).

My friend has been having some behavioral issues with her 4 yr. old. She is looking for any suggestions or even to be told that her DS is a typical 4 yr. old. 

Here are some situations that come up frequently:

1. Refuses to participate in group activities at school. Story time, circle time, or anything that doesn't involve play time. He's been in school since age 2.5.

2. Will not participate during any special classes (swim lessons, gym classes, etc). He will either play in the corner by himself or scream and cry when (nicely) coaxed by the teacher to participate. 

When asked why he doesn't want to participate in a specific situation, he usually answers that he just wants to play. 

Any insight/advice? Thank you! :)

    She said it has been going on for about 4 months or so.

    Is she still there? She may have to leave him there or make him think she has left.

    How do others react? Has she taken him out of things because of this? If so, she may have to leave him in it. DD use to be a leg hugger and I put her in soccer and told her that I paid and we committed and that was that. She broke out of it. She is now very confidant in speaking up and participating.

    The funny thing is, her DS has no problem with her leaving and says that he likes school. Same with his activities. He just has a problem when being told what to do by teachers, instructors, etc. If he could just go to a class and play freely with the other kids, he'd be more than happy. The problems seem to come in when he is asked to participate in group activities or do something he doesn't particularly want to do. For example, he'll be playing with a toy and refuses to stop when the teacher calls an end to play time and wants to start circle time.
