Tips for NB prefolds?

Lil man is 11 days old now and I'm attempting to CD during the day not feeling confident enough to do then all night too. I'm using thirsties shells with yellow trimmed inserts. I'm constantly worried I'm not getting a good fit. When LO goes 2 it leaks past the insert on to the shell. I've got 4 shells but they don't seem to be enough and I'm worried about their fit.
Also, his onesies don't fit we'll enough to snap over the bulky diaper. Do most people just go a size up to accommodate for the CD?

Re: Tips for NB prefolds?

  • Are you just trifolding the prefolds and placing them in the cover? From what I've read this isn't the best for NB poo as it tends to get on everything. If you snappi or pin the prefold around your lo it should hold in the poo better to keep it off of the covers. If you don't want to do this you may just have to accept the fact that it's going to get on the covers so you may need to invest in more covers.

  • We found that the jellyroll worked really well.  You have to make sure that the fit around the legs is snug.

  • NB poo is very hard to contain. The jelly roll fold worked well for us also. Most of the time poop made its way to the cover though. You might have to get more covers if you want to cd full time right now. It gets easier when they start to poop less!

  • Are you using a snappi?  Although trifolding a prefold is faster, a snappi is really the secret to containing newborn poo.  Also, don't be afraid to fold down the front and/or back as much as you can.  The more it is folded down, the less loose material you get hanging between the legs (and you get more absorbancy inside).

  • I had been trying a trifold, now I'm trying the angel wing and bikini twist to see which works better. I ordered some snappis today and two extra covers. Hopefully I'll get the hang of it soon. Also wouldn't mind DS going through fewer diapers. We're at 14 a day right now. Wish me luck.
