NPR: Holiday Dinner Ideas

I know I am a little early, but I am overly excited this year about the holidays.

So, for the first time, my DH and I are hosting Christmas Eve at our place.  Growing up, my family always did lasagna, ham or even like sub sandwiches.  Some years were more formal than others.

I would like to make an actual dinner.  I have never made a ham or turkey and that is normally what we eat for Thanksgiving, so I would like to make something else.

Any ideas or suggestions? There will be about 12 (two toddlers - although I don't mind making them something else) of us total.  I think I can come up with sides, but the main dish is what I am having troubles with.  TIA!

  • Who makes the ham? Call them and ask them how to make it. You have to have ham.

    Also, ham.

  • My mom gets a prime rib at GFS. It's fully cooked and just needs to be warmed in the oven then sliced. It has always been really good!

In addition to that, we usually have twice-baked pototoes, noodles, and various other side dishes.
  • Turkey is easy and ham?  Well, the good people at the Honey Baked Ham store make that for me and I just pick it up :)

    Should I serve ham, MissNikki?

  • Ham. Smile You just heat it up. It's already cooked and sliced for you!

But, if that's not what you're looking for, you could always do a beef stew.  My mom used to make a version of beef bourgionne (sp?) with au gratin potatoes. YUM!

  • I'm Greek, so we usually have some kind of lamb. Lamb > ham.

A lot of Christmases my dad will also either make prime rib or a beef tenderloin roast - but those can sometimes get tricky if people like their meat to a different doneness.

My mom and step dad make a lamb every year, along with the ham. No one ever eats it but them.

  • You know what we did last year for Christmas Eve?

    FON-fxckin-DUE.

    It was fabulous.

  • Our Christmas Eve dinner is usually very casual because we have been baking and eating cookies all day.  We have country ham biscuits, citrus salad and cheese grits.  And more cookies.  Christmas day we have a fancy meal: beef, twice baked potatoes, asparagus, fancy rolls etc.

With 12 people it could be difficult, unless you had 2 fondue pots.

We started with the typical swiss cheese fondue with veggies, bread and apples for dipping.

Then we moved onto the main course with marinated steak, shrimp, chicken and veggies.

I have an electric fondue pot and it's definitely safer than the sterno ones.  And the heat stays consistent.

  • We always grill steaks on Christmas. I like it because it is very non-traditional and gives everyone a chance to "chill".  The guys all hang-out outside and grill and drink brews while all of the ladies hang-out in the kitchen and munch on appetizers and drink and laugh.  We make onion stuffed baked potatoes, a fully loaded salad and garlic bread to go along with it.

The kids play in the playroom and then we all sit down for dinner.  I love it!!

    I can't wait for Christmas.

  • We save the turkey for Christmas Day and have ham or roast beef on Christmas Eve.

  • Lasanga is also our traditional family meal for Xmas Eve.  I say go with that.  It's pretty easy to make and also toddler friendly IMO.

  • One year my mom made a beef Wellington.  It was pretty and festive: she put little dough leaves on the outside.  Talk about labor intensive though.

     Prime rib and horseradish?

Every year on Christmas Eve our tradition is to make coq au vin stuffed pasta shells.  Inside one of them is an almond.  Whoever finds it gets to open the first present.  Of course, now that my DD has been diagnosed with tree nut allergies I need an edible alternative this year.

And now I'm in the mood for ham.

  • What about a pork tenderloin. We had one last year with a cherry and sausage stuffing and a cherry bourbon glaze, it might have had bacon as well. It was excellent. You can do that with a twice baked potato and a veggie. Most can be made ahead of time and then just be heated up so you can have time with you guests.
