Babies: 9 - 12 Months

bedtime question from a 3-6 month mom...

Did your LO's bedtime change as he/she got older?  My LO is almost 5 months, and since about 1 month, he has had an early bedtime (usually asleep by 6PM).  We tried to move his bed time back, make other adjustments, but 6PM is the magic time so now we're grooving with it.  He still wakes about 2x per night, and is up for the day 6/630AM for daycare, and on weekends wakes between 6-8AM.  I wish he had a later bedtime because it limits how "late" we can be places with him, I don't get to see him much after I get home from work, etc.

Just wondering if in the next couple months as he gets older if he will naturally evolve to a later bedtime. Did your LO maintain the same bedtime as he/she grew older in the first year?

Thanks!

Re: bedtime question from a 3-6 month mom...

  • DD will be 11 months on Friday and she just (within the last few days) seems to be ready for a slightly later bedtime.  She's been in bed around 6/6:30 since she was ~10 weeks old.  She sleeps 12 straight hours and is up at 630 for daycare everyday.

I actually love her bedtime, even though it does limit us and what we can do/how much we see her in the evening, etc.  That said, I'd love for her bedtime to be just a TAD later.  like 7.

  • Be careful what you wish for.  Will used to go to bed around 8 or 9.  Now I am LUCKY to get him asleep by 11.. He will not go to sleep early no matter what I do.

  • DS's bedtime has actually gotten earlier. He STTN starting at 4 weeks, but it was from like 1am-7am or something like that. He's been going to bed at 8-8:30 for a while now. Although we did have a rough patch around 9-10 months when he seemingly pushed his bedtime back to like 10pm. Beware if that happens... he was actually overly tired and when we started putting him to bed at 8 again even though he didn't seem tired everything was right in the world again :).

  • It does gradually get later.  My 1 year old goes to sleep at about 6:30.  My 3 year old did at this age too, but now his bedtime is more like 7:30.  Some nights we can get him to hang until more like 8:30.  I expect the bedtime to be 8 or earlier for years to come.

I would say, it's likely to get later by about 15-30 minutes within the first year.  There will be times when it might get temporarily earlier again, like when dropping naps

  • DD is a night owl. We started with her bedtime at 7pm. It got moved back later and later. Now we are lucky to get her in bed by 9pm without a fuss. I would look at the cues that he gives you (rubbing eyes, yawning, fussy) and go with it.

We decided not to force a bed time because the hours of drama aren't worth it to us. If we just let her wear herself out she will go to sleep later by herself.

DD also has been traveling with us to visit family in multiple time zones so that could have played a part in her just not wanting to go to sleep before we do. It can be exhausting, but we do get to do things out later with her if we want to. We don't always do it, but its an option if we happen to have a long dinner with friends we don't have to worry about getting her back for bed time. She just chills with us.

  • My DD used to go to bed real late.  So glad that has changed!  She now goes to sleep by 8.  Although I have slowly been moving it back to 9...since we have a time change coming up.  So much better than when I was lucky if she went to sleep by midnight!  So yes, it has changed.

  • Id say that DD's bedtime has stayed the same, or even gotten a little bit earlier. We read Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child (or whatever its called) and they stressed an early bedtime. We really try to follow her cues, and the second she seems sleepy at night, its straight into the bath and then bed. Its worked really well for us.

  • From what I've seen, bedtime is individual to each baby and what kind of mood their in.  Some days, he's rubbing his eyes by 7:15.  Others, I'm lucky to get him down by 8.  When he was little, 8:30 or 9 was the magic time.  But once we crib trained him, he fell asleep at feedings much sooner.

I'm sure he'll go to bed later when he's older, but I will say I distinctly remember having an 8pm bedtime until I was 5 or 6.  I'm fine with DS's current bedtime as it gives me the evening to myself, but I admit it's hard when he sometimes thinks 5:30 is a great time to be up for the day.
