So, your boss calls you and tells you to plan on taking the afternoons off for the remainder of your time working before you begin maternity leave. He will pay you for them and you do not need to use any sick/vacation/personal time. How would you feel about this?

Re: Not so hypothetical question . . wwyd?
Put it in writing & score, peace out afternoons.
I would ask why though especially if I didn't think it was a necessity for my own physical or mental well being.
This. That's really nice of him to grant you daily nap time at no charge.
I'm in kind of the same situation. I have been slow and whenever I ask for work to do, they just say that I should be taking it easy and not to worry about it.
I'm not that concerned that they're putting the old bait and switch on me bc I have asked around and this is pretty standard practice in my office.
"A new baby is like the beginning of all things--wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities."
But in a situation for someone else I would say thank them, and ask them for details and reasoning, and then ask if I could have it in writing.
I'm super stoked about it but on the other hand I think it is odd considering that is NOT something our company would do. When I asked him why he pretty much said because I don't have much longer and I could probably use the extra time to relax and put my feet up before the baby comes. Plus, I've been having some elevated blood pressure and I go back Friday to find out if it more serious than gestational hypertension (which my boss also knows).
I can't imagine there is anything fishy going on because I'm a very high performer and I am the go-to person for my boss. I was told by our admin who handles all the time keeping stuff that this is a reward for my performance and that I should absolutely take advantage of it.
I just don't know if I can take time off that I don't feel like I need (even though I would love it!) in good conscience. As far as documentation goes, a time report is run each week for all of the salaried employees and the managers have to sign off on it, so it will be well documented.
I guess I should just relax and enjoy my time off . . .and extra time to bump!

Given this information, I would be comfortable taking reward. It sounds like you really are a good employee and your boss wants to do something nice for you.
I have issues taking off like that too and being given "special treatment" during pregnancy. But, I think if we can't do it now, when can we ever?
Enjoy the time off and get some rest - lord knows we can all use that right now!
Given this (you are a high-performer, the go to person for your boss, and the admin says it's a performance reward), I would be totally stoked and take advantage!!! Lucky you (for this and for having an awesome boss)!!!!
this!
