Female or Male OB

My DH asked me the other day why I have a female OB rather than a male. I told him that I have just always had female doctors. Couldnt think of a better reason. So just for S&G "Do you prefer a Female or Male OB?" Any particular reason? (Not the best question in the world, but I am kinda bored)

Re: Female or Male OB

  • It was really important to me that I have a female OB and that if I were at a rotating practice, that all of the OBs were female. I get really nervous and stressed out about men(other than DH) being close to me in any way due to abuse I suffered as a little girl, and I knew I would not be comfortable at all with a male OB/GYN.

  • I have all female ob's.  I have my own obgyn that I see in the office when I'm not pregnant.  I have rotated through them all (4) since I won't know who's on call when I deliver.  I prefer having someone with the same parts as I do.  I don't know why, but I have never been comfortable having male doctors.

  • I would have said female in the past but I don't mind the male that I see sometimes at my OB office. I just want someone competent to make choices for my LO and me in times of crisis. Sometimes delivery decisions are made fast so I need to trust my team of OBs regardless.

  • Female. I like to think that they can give first-hand experience feedback with relation to a lot of the OB stuff. DH tells me that's sexist. Oh well.

ETA: I have seen male OBs for urgent care stuff. I don't mind, but for my regular OB visits, I prefer a female.

  • My OB is a male. I don't really care either way.

  • I honestly never even thought about it. I have a male OB and I love him. He's so down to earth and I've never once felt awkward around him. I don't think I'd have a problem with a female either - I just happened to pick this guy because I know many, many people that have seen him and all recommended him to me!

  • Ever since I've seen an OB I have had a woman. The practice I go to now is all women and I love it. They all have the same parts I do, and I would feel really weird having some other guy that isn't DH poking around down there.

  • With my first pregnancy, I went with a practice of midwives that were all female.  This time, I'm in a practice with OBs and midwives and there are males and females.  And actually, the only person I feel uncomfortable with is the female OB that is filling in for a couple OBs on maternity leave.  I think, at least for me, after having one kid, I'm not as modest about my body in regards to childbirth.  So I really don't care if I'm delivered by a man or a woman, as long as I am comfortable with them as a person.
  • It doesn't bother me either way. I had a male OB with DS, and I have a female this time. DH said he preferred me having a female doctor because of the internal exams and such, but if I hadn't been able to go to the doctor I see now, I would have been just as comfortable with a male.

  • I have a male ob but have seen female maternal fetal medicine doctors and a few female reproductive endocrinologists.  Overall, my male ob has the best bedside manner of the lot of them and he also is the one I feel will always listen and answer all of my questions.  Those are the things that are important to me, not if the doc is a man or woman.  He's also always rated as one of the top doctors in Milwaukee so that is another plus.

Oddly, the worst treatment I've ever received is from a female ob during my first miscarriage.  I remember wondering how another woman could be so callous while my male ob cried with me over my loss.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

    This Cluttered Life

  • I picked based on others' recommendations for my OB practice, and they assigned me my "primary" Dr because he was available. However, I see different Dr's at my practice all the time, and my first baby was delivered by the Dr on call, not the one I saw the most. And it turned out, I liked her better!

I think if I had good reason to switch, I would try to find a female OB because in my experience, they seem to relate better (assuming they have had children).

  • I started with a male cause thats who my mom went to. He retired and I went with another male at the practice. When he retired he referred me to the guy I have now(much younger so not retiring any time soon). I feel very comfortable with him. I've had issues with a woman primary care doctor talking down to me and being rude to me. So I'm glad that I have a great doctor that will be handling the most important part of my life.
  • I've had the same doctor with all three pregnancies, and he is male.  The MFM I have been going to the last couple of months is also male.  It has never bothered me having a male doctor.

  • I have (and prefer) a female OB.

  • Before kids, I was 100% only female OBs.

Now, I don't really have a preference. Honestly, it seems a lot of the males OBs I've seen have had better bedside manner and have been more gentle during things like internals. It's almost like since they don't have vaginas, they're a little more careful with them.

Both girls were delivered via c-section by female OBs though, and tenatively c-section #3 is set w/two female OBs. We'll see if we make it that far though ;)

  • I happened to pick a practice that has 5 female OBs.
However my regular gynecologist is a male. He used to deliver babies and was an OB for several several years and I was bummed when he stopped that part of his practice a couple years ago. He is truely an amazing dr.
My very first pap was done by a woman and she was so aweful and rough and just cold. After that I happened to have my next pap with the male dr and he was so much more careful and considerate and from that moment on I decided I would not see another woman Gyno. That was when I was 18! Lol

Some people commented on the woman having the same parts as them and that's why they want a female. I don't know about you but I've only had one internal exam since getting pregnant and I won't have another one until I'm in labor....the rest of the appointments are checking baby's heart beat, your health, ect and I don't personally think that has anything to do with the person checking you having a penis or vagina lol
And when it comes to delivery...not all of my 5 female drs have children so its not like they are better off taking care of me than the male who also hasn't given birth lol

  • Before I was a doctor myself, I preferred women. Now that I've seen things from the other side, I really don't care either way. There are good and bad doctors of both sexes.

My primary OB is a woman, but the practice has rotating call so there is a reasonable chance of one of the men delivering me. There is one doctor (a woman) in the practice who I don't much care for; other than that I'm happy with any of them.

  • Normally, I have a male family doctor, and he does my annuals. I like him a lot, and have never thought differently of him for being a guy. I've only ever had a female dr once and she was horrible very judgmental for my wanting birth control while not being married.

That said, I have an all female OB practice for my pregnancy. I started with the practice bc one of my friends loved her dr there who was male and I needed birth control after the incident with the judgmental chick. He left leaving all women and I switch to my current OB. I must say though, there is something comforting when she talks about being pregnant with her little girls... You can't get that from a guy.

  • My OB is a male. I don't feel like there is any particular reason why I have a male OB. My doctors have always been male so it's not a big deal to me. I just want a doctor I feel comfortable with and that is competent.

  • My pedi growing up was male, my family doctor was male, my endocrinologist was male and my OB is male. It just kinda happened that way.  My PCP is female and great, but I think I got lucky with her. When I was researching OBs, I had an HMO and a lot of the in network female OBs had a lot of complaints about their attitudes. Not sure if there is any validity to this opinion, but make doctors don't seem to be as emotional.

  • My OB is a male and when I had my breast reduction, I also had a male surgeon. I have really liked both of them. I have gone to females and really haven't had good experiences with them. I actually wanted a male OB and he is a little older, which I like. I did see a woman doctor there at the office one time and she seemed nice, but I still prefer my male OB. He has been keeping a good eye out on me with my  BP and I feel pretty confident with him.

Like a PP said, I have heard that women OBs can be a little rougher than men. Also, I think we feel awkward about our private parts which is why some people say that they would rather a woman OB/GYN, but we need to remember that these doctors do this on a daily basis and do not think of stuff the same way. It's a job to them and it doesn't phase them like it does us. That's why I don't really worry about a male OB.

  • i prefer female because when you dont necessarily know how to describe something they "just get it."  I have seen a male once in an emergency and it wasnt as awkward as i thought it'd be.When it comes to delivering this baby, I dont care!

  • I have a male OB, I don't have much experience with a female one, I only had one appt with a midwife before moving and seeing my current OB. Not from personal experience, but I've heard from a lot of women that they prefer a male because they are more likely to listen and be sympathetic to issues, simply because they don't know what it feels like to a women or e pregnant.

I love my OB, he's a sweet, funny and super caring man that actually assisted in my mom's delivery with me! Weird, right?

  • My obgyn has a sign in her office that I think sums it up pretty well.

A male gynecologist is like an auto mechanic that's never owned a car
  • I've always had a female family Dr for paps, etc, but the only 2 OBs in my town are both male. I'm really comfortable with mine though. He has a great bedside manner and is a bit older-which is great because he's one of the few I've heard of that will deliver breech and compound presentations vaginally. And as a nurse I like him because he always drops off bags of candy in emerg on his way to his clinic :) ahh the little things...

  • I have a male OB. I preferred having a male and didn't know why I felt that way but after he delivered DS I definitely think it was worth it to have a male. He used his strong man hands and got that baby out fast!

  • I had a female ob before but she was too busy.  I then chose a male ob because of his good yelp reviews but he was too busy as well.  Now I am having my male MFM who is willing to be my ob too.  I like him because he has a good team and he has a good bedside manner and very professional and really know what he's doing.  Most importantly, he gives dh and me a lot of time to ask questions.

  • When I was younger and first started going for GYN stuff I would see a female. Now that I am older I do not care either way. I have had 2 females and 2 males since I was 15. I find that the male OBs are easier to get into and make appts with.. probably because they have less patients?

  • I have a midwife, and I honestly can't think of ever hearing of a male midwife.  I've also only ever seen female OBs.  I don't think men have any clue what it feels like to have a vagina/uterus, be pregnant, have a period, or be a woman.  That's probably a really sexist reason to only see female health care providers for my female organs, but that's my reason.
  • I've seen mostly male OB/GYNs in my life, at least since I was 20 or so.

I love my current OB who is a male....and quite cute I might add. :)

  • I have had female OBs for the past few years because they were referred by friends. I have had male OBs before but never liked them as much as I like my female OBs, I don't know why.

  • I have a rotating practice 1 female midwife, 1 female OB and 1 make OB. I love love LOVE my male OB. He has 2 daughters who are about 510 years younger than me and he reminds me of my Dad, whos a physician, with his mannerisms so it makes me feel comfortable. I know, it sounds weird. Until I got pregnant I only saw the midwife. My husband wants the midwife to deliver because he thinks its weird a man all up in my junk. I don't care either way, honestly.
