Ready made formula vs. powder?

Hey ladies.

I unfortunately did not produce one drop of milk due to a traumatic labor, so my twins have been on Similac Sensitive formula from Day 1. The ready made bottles are SO expensive. And although I will keep them on if necessary was wondering if any think the Nestl? Goid start  formula is better? Also, I know the powder cans are cheaper, but the one time we tried it, neither one wanted to drink it at all!!!! When did y'all switch from ready made formula to powder?

TIA!

Re: Ready made formula vs. powder?

  • We switched when we came home from the hospital at 4 days pp. The only reason we switched is because I didn't realize we only had a couple of the premixed bottles left. Luckily the hospital had given us a can of Enfamil newborn and the girls took it ok.

  • We only used the premade if it was free from the hospital or we got 6 boxes free from the Similac multiples program.  I would suggest getting a Dr Brown's formula mixing pitcher or use a blender to mix powder formula and make their bottles for the whole day-such a time saver!

  • We only used the pre-made bottles in an emergency. We bought a couple packs and throw a couple in the diaper bag just in case we need them.

I really like the Dr. Browns pitcher. It mixes well without lots of bubbles or clumps.

(We also used Similac Sensitive and switched to the generic version in Up and Up brand.)

  • We used powder starting as soon as we came home.  The ready made stuff stained all their clothes so badly.  I was spending too much time scrubbing.  The powder doesn't do that.  If you decide to switch to powdered I recommend a Dr. Brown's Formula Pitcher or something similar.  Some juice pitchers come with the little handle that moves up and down to mix, and you can find them in Walmart.  Just make sure it's BPA free.  The only down side to the Dr. Browns pitcher is that it doesn't mix enough formula for 2 babies once they are eating more than ~15oz a day.  HTH!

  • I would agree with the other moms. I had to supplement by boys with formula and the ready made stained their clothes. It is also a lot more expensive them the powder.

  • I never used ready made with my oldest even once. The only time I used it with my youngest was in the hospital before we were discharged. I think it's a silly and unnecessary "convenience". You could try mixing up the powdered formula in a pitcher and gradually adding an ounce or two of it to the readymade until they're swapped over.

  • We switched from ready made neosure bottles to powder after the boys left the hospital and they didn't seem to notice - is there a temperature difference?  Are you using cold water to make the power?  If you are, just try sticking the bottles in a container of hot tap water first - that might work if they are used to room-temp premades.

  • Ready made is crazy expensive.  We switched to powder after a few months and then when Similac Sensitive had a recall, we switched to Up and Up (Target). We made a pitcher at night for the next day and used a hand blender to mix it. Quick and easy!

We used ready made at night only. I used powder during the day and just mixed as needed. I know the ready made is pricey, but it made nights a lot easier.

Get the Dr.Browns formula pitcher and make a big batch up at night!   I pour like 8 bottles and refrigerate them then when they wake to eat I just stick them in a Tupperware of hot water while I change diapers.

  • My kids took a a day or two to switch from the ready made enfacare to the powered stuff without being skeptical about it and taking forever to drink it. I tried to give my DD premade the other day and it took a few minutes before she started to drink it.
They also get breast milk so i don't know if that has anything to do with it.
