Adoption

Agency Cost Question

The agency we might go with is about 28,000 dollars for everything(that does not include subtracting the tax credit..if it is signed again..ect).  My husband wants me to ask for the people who have already adopted here/going through adoption.  Is this a high amount.  Are there agencies out there that are way less?

How much is the total amount of money that you will be spending on adoption?

Had our meeting tonight with the agency in our town and we just wanted to see number wise if they are really less then other places.  They say most places are 40,000-50,000 so they are more affordable.

7/18/12-1st RE appointment CD2 blood work taken. Told to move straight to IVF. Starting BC pills and FSH injections plus Lupron. Hopefully doing ET in September Off BCP March 2011 Started TTC July 2011 7 months TTC with no luck an then.... Diagnosed 2/24/12 with 2 Ovarian Cysts. 3/22/12-Lap to remove cysts, look for endo, and see if tubes are clear. 3/22/12-Diagnosed with Severe Endo(tubes are clear). 4/4/12-Post op OBGYN appointment. Told chances of conceiving naturally are very low, but told conceiving in the next few months is our best chance due to being cleaned out during Lap. Referred to a RE. RE said IVF is our only chance to get pregnant. Told only a 20% chance even with two put in. 9/5-Lupron 9/20 Stims(Menopur & Follistim) 9/30 Trigger time 10/2 ER 10/3 fert report-out of 7 eggs retrieved only 2 fertilized. Hello "Thing 1 and Thing 2!" Kinda sad there is none to freeze. Because only 2 we will have 2DT to get them back into a natural envionment 10/4 ET. Found out that only 1 divided. We love you "Thing 2." Thing 1 is now snuggled inside me and we are praying it will be our take home baby! **Did not even make it to my beta, the day before on 10/16/12 I got my F'in period** Such a stab in the heart. Nov 2012-Moving onto domestic newborn adoption! Can't wait for my take home baby. We will try IVF again after 1-2 years of a clear head. Need a break from infertility treatments/issues for my mental sanity! image

Re: Agency Cost Question

  • Anyone willing to let us know how much your adoption was or how much it is going to cost you?

  • Our agency uses a sliding scale fee, but the highest cost on that scale is $17,000.
  • We originally were looking at doing domestic infant and we sent away for info to about 10 different agencies.  The lowest price (this is on the east coast in a higher cost of living area) was $28,000 +/- and most ranged in the $30-35,000.  As PP said some have sliding scales.

Thanks yeah, I think the sliding scales are for income.  We make pretty good money so I do not think we would qualify to be on a lower end of the sliding scale.  Our debt to income ratio is what stinks right now with my grad school collage loan, my husband's collage loan, our mortgage, and 2 new car loans.  Not the best time.  I think we will probably go with the adoption agency in our town, but I wanted to check around.  I looked up a bunch of other agencies in our area and they are around the same price or more.

  • $28K sounds pretty standard. Where are you located? You can find some that have lower fees, some that have higher. The lowest we saw was $17K (and I think it would have inched up in the end), and the highest we saw was $46K. Some agencies charge fees on a sliding scale based on income. Some have lower fees for their AA program.

We spent $34K in fees for DD's adoption in 2010

I'd do your own research on agencies in your area, as well as regional/national/out-of-state agencies and see what the range is, and more importantly, who you'd want to work with.

  • Our agency in SD (where everything is dirt cheap) is 16k.  They don't have a sliding scale or anything, but they recently re-vamped their fees about 2 years ago so that rather then having the fees also cover the pregnancy counsling side of things, the AP only cover the fees of the adoption and the pregnancy side of it is covered solely by donations.  GL!

  • Seems standard to me.
I am open about our expenses (these are round numbers):

1-  DD1 adoption was about 6K... this is unheard of but it happened to us!

    2-  DD2 adoption was about 29K.

3-  Lost 11K at agency #1, lost $2500 with failed match #1, lost 5K with failed match #2, lost $5000 with failed match #3, have $16K that was from failed match #3 sitting on account with an agency and we hope to use it for a third adoption.

I share the details of lost money because that can be a reality.  Our adoptions might look "cheap" on the surface but in total, we've spent over $80K to adopt two girls.  Ugh.

On agency quotes-- keep in mind many times travel is not quoted and that can be anythign from a few hundred dollars to $5K.  Agency quotes often don't include things like fees for fingerprints, notary charges, fed ex bills... while these are usually a few hundred dollars or less.. I found them annoying. In the grand scheme, it wasn't much but we hadn't budgeted for it.

     HTH

  • Hi - We have recently narrowed down to two agencies and one small attorney. The agencies were $28K and around $40k. The attorney could work out to be cheaper... but it depends on the birth mother support. The thing that is appealing to us about the larger agency is the "all in" cost, not as much risk involved financially if there is a disruptuon because they will put the money towards the next match. So hard putting a dollar amount on this... !
