Ferber success stories?

We've been putting it off for awhile now, but have decided to start Ferber tonight since DH has a long weekend to help.  For a little encouragement can you please tell me your success stories?

Re: Ferber success stories?

  • My oldest never slept.  Finally, on her 1st b-day, I let her CIO.  She cried for 3hrs.  The next night, it was less.  The night after that, less.  Within a week, she was going to sleep and has ever since.

I wish I didn't wait so long because her refusal to sleep nearly ruined my marriage.

I tried it for naps, but it didn't work.  I gave up on the naps because I'm just happy she's sleeping at night.  I let the dream of napping die and focus on being happy she sleeps at night!

My pedi doesn't call it CIO....he calls it "Taking Back The Night".  That's exactly what it did.  Well, until my younger one decided sleeping sucks and, for the last month, has refused to sleep!  We were going to let her CIO last night, but, miraculously, she slept!

I used to dread every night......starting at around 6pm, I'd start to get anxious because I knew another miserable night was ahead of me.  Now, at 8:30pm, she goes to bed and that's that.

    Good luck!

  • We used the suggestions in Easy Sleep Solutions (doing interval checks) a few weeks ago.  DD wouldn't take naps anymore and other soothing techniques were not working; she wasn't getting her needed sleep at all and seemed so tired all the time so we tried this approach for both night and nap sleep.  She did really well and it didn't take as long as I thought it would.  She had still been getting up a few times a night to nurse but I had a feeling it was only out of habit.  I hadn't planned on weaning her off night feedings but the first night we used these techniques, she dropped all night feedings on her own and started STTN.  She's only reverted back to getting up at night when she's not feeling well (which was this past week) but last night went back to STTN on her own.  Good luck!

  • My life has completely changed ever since we did Ferber.  Prior to 5 months old, he was waking up every 3 hours during the night like clockwork.  He would fall asleep fine, but wake up 3 hours later.  On our ped's advice, we started tanking him up with food in the afternoon and early evening just to be sure he wasn't hungry.  The first night was awful.  We went in to comfort him on the intervals and got up to 2.5 hours one time!  He literally looked possessed he was so angry.  The second night he woke up twice and went back to sleep VERY quickly afterward.  The third night, he STTN and has been doing so ever since.  There was a time a few weeks ago where he started waking up again, and I started putting his paci in instead of doing the patting and that was a bad call.  Pretty soon, he'd wake up every night at that same time expecting me to come in and put the paci in.  Make sure you don't use any props (feeding, paci) to get them back to sleep.  I had to wean him off the paci thing, but it was pretty easy at 6 months.  Anyway, I love Dr. Ferber.  This method works and works fast!  His naps have gotten longer during the day.  He seems happier.  Last night, he slept from 7:15 until 5:30, ate and went back to sleep until 8:30!  He is a sleeping machine!  I've actually started going to bed later again and feel rested! which is a serious blessing.  Good luck!
  • Thanks Ladies!  Getting ready to start our night routine now and then the fun begins!
