I will be going back to work in a few weeks. After having DD, I think I would prefer to work part time. Because our department will be restructured I should have a good chance. Has anyone been able to negotiate part time hours? And if so, are you glad you made the change? Any advice is appreciated.
Re: Going part time
I went PT after I had DS. Worked 3 days/week up until he turned 2 and now I work 4 days/week. I get paid hourly, so I took a pay cut to do this. I am still happy that I made the decision to work PT. The only "regret" I have is that I don't make as much money as I could, but I'm happy with what I make and contribute to the family. I think the key to making working part-time successful is to have a supervisior who is supportive and understands the benefits/downfalls to this work situation.
Good luck!
I scaled back to 32 hours a week when DS was around a year old. It's great for me. I love having the extra day with the kids. It's great both to be able to do fun stuff during the week when it's less crowded and to have that extra time to do laundry, run to the grocery store, make a dinner that takes longer than 20 minutes.
My pay and benefits were cut to 4/5 of what they were before, but it's totally worth it for me.
I'd talk about what happens to your extra work, how you see your schedule working, why it would benefit both you and the company. If there are others who do part-time work, talk to them and see how it went and if they have tips.
A problem some people face is having to do full-time work on a p/t schedule. If I were doing a lot of nights/weekends or coming in on my day off, I don't know if it'd be worth it. Also, our daycare will only do p/t for kids over 3, so I still pay full-time rates for my daughter.
