Play Kitchen Recommendations

I am trying to get a head start on Christmas - and I'm thinking about getting DD a play kitchen.  I want one that she can play with now, but also that she can continue to play with for several years and not outgrow it.  They are almost 20 months.....I found the Kidkraft Kitchen in Espresso....anyone have it - pros/cons?  Also, what other gifts would you recommend for your LOs around that age?!?!  Would be a PLUS if they would work for both DS and DD!!!  Thanks!!!

I dont think they sell the one I got my daughter  but it is similar to this. I got it  when she was 1 and she still plays with it everyday (she is 3 now) BEST toy I have ever gotten her!!

  • I think a kitchen would be great for little boys and little girls.  I have friends with boys who got them kitchens and they love them.  We have this one

It was inexpensive, we got it on Black Friday, and I like that it's plastic.  No sharp corners for little heads to hit.  We got it for DD1 when she was 18 months old.  She still plays with it and now so do the babies.  I would make sure to get some fake plastic food to go along with it.  My kids also love Mega Blocks (my babies are already able to put these together themselves) or Duplos and wooden blocks (my DD1 got these for her 2nd birthday and loves them, the babies don't play with them yet).  We have LOTS of Little People - farm, school bus, princess castle, air plane.

Also, we have lots of wooden puzzles.  DD1 is just starting to teach the babies how to do the ones with three or four pieces and each piece has a peg for the baby to hold onto.  My DD1 LOVES puzzles and is really good at them (the ones that are age appropriate for her, I mean.  She doesn't play with the chunky wooden ones anymore.  LOL) and I'm hoping the babies like them too.

This is pretty much the same one I got DD 6 years ago. I think 6 years is a good life of a toy.  She just told us she wants to give it away a few weeks ago and get a big girl desk.

  • That Kidcraft one is really cute. Personally I'm not a fan of plastic toys, so we found DD a nice wooden play kitchen on Etsy. There are a lot of them available by different sellers.

  • My DH built one for the girls when Lucy was 2 and it's gotten a LOT of use. My 18mo DD is just now starting to use and she loves it! We decided to build one just so it would accommodate more kids and hold up longer - we built ours to fit about a 6 year old and then made a long bench for the littles to stand on and use it until they're big enough. It is by far our most-used toy!

  • We got this one second hand from another MoM: https://www.step2.com/p/50-s-Diner

We like it because it's big enough for them to both sit and have a snack (the mom I bought it from said her twins used to do this a lot!) and it allows for multiple kids to use it.  I found it was good for boys AND girls.

That's awesome! We have this one: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12894148 which my kids really like. But that walk in one is even better, although I think I'd need a bigger house to put it in!

    And ditto buying plastic food.

That's the same one we have. I wanted a wooden one but could only spend about $50-60 and after looking for several months, didn't find any hot deals on 2nd hand wood play kitchens so I found this one 2nd hand on CL for $25. Such a good deal! I like that the colors are neutral and from what I've heard from several families with KidKraft or other wooden kitchens vs Step Two or Little Tikes is that even though the wooden ones are trendier now and look nicer, they don't always hold up as well; the plastic is very durable. Our kitchen's about 5 years old and still looks brand-new, doesn't get dings or scratches like wood does.

My boys are almost 4 and play with it often, and we've had 5-8 year olds over who played with it quite a bit too.

  • We got a Step 2 kitchen for DS1 for Christmas last year and both boys love it.  The play food is annoying and ends up everywhere, but since we knew we were buying the kitchen when family asked what DS1 wanted we said play food to go with it so we got a ton of it plus dishes. The version we got is maroon, so not super girly, but one of his little girl friends had a pink version and all we heard about for months was how he wanted a kitchen at our house.
