"Standing"

It's good for them right?  Strengthens their legs, helps with balance, development, etc?  My DH seems to think that when we hold up LO and let him "stand" with the bulk of his weight on his legs that it is going to make him boat-legged.  I think that is the stupidest thing in the world.  Babies are born boat-legged (per my pedi), that's the only way they'll manage to get out of our vag.  I'm right, right?

Re: "Standing"

  • The standing and later walking are what makes the legs straighten. And if standing is a problem, we're in trouble because DS loves bearing weight on his legs!

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • Most kids have bow legs until about 2 years old. Standing won't worsen them ; that's an old wives tale. :)
  • DS's pediatrician saw him "standing" on my lap at DS's two-month appointment.  She commented that he was getting strong and had great head control.  Then she said that she felt bad for parents who had children who met developmental milestones early because "if they stand early, they tend to walk early and pretty soon those parents are chasing their kids all over."

  • Yeah DS has been standing and doing squats for weeks.  He LOVES it and gets pretty fussy if he stays in laying down for long when he isn't sleepy.  He has stopped being quite as insistent on it as he is starting to sit now, but he definitely likes to be upright.

  • Babies "standing" when born is actually a reflex. You need to watch for posters who said babies can stand and it's good for them, it's not good if LO is too young hence why when u put them in a jumperoo or such it's barely touching the floor. It's one thing when they jump ti bare the weight but more concerned about constant weight on their legs when not ready and head control. the bowed legs issue isn't even an issue as babies have bowed legs to some extent being in the
womb. However I u are constantly holding baby in a standing position u will notice like a reflex like swallowing and breathing they are born and will take "steps". I wouldn't make baby stand until ready

This is what I thought too. Like LOs standing or taking steps at this age is like when they close their hands on your finger. Just reflexes.
