Hmmmm - what to do for Halloween?

Our friends invited us to go trick or treating in their neighborhood this year(they came to ours last year).  Which is fine, however, we already bought a load of candy.   I kind of want to just put it out in a bowl with a sign saying to please take a few.  Some of our neighbors did this last year and everyone was very good about it.  DH is afraid someone is going to take the whole bowl, but I don't want to be stuck that much candy!  Also, we live in a somewhat secluded neighborhood and everyone is very friendly with each other.  I mean block parties, barbecues, the teenagers babysit around the neighbors, etc.  Most of the kids fall in between 1-8 and last year, everyone came well supervised for trick or treating.  I don't really imagine them being rude and taking an entire bowl of candy.

  • You say you don't want to be stuck with the candy. I say put it out. Hopefully people will be respectful. If not, oh well, lesson learned and you still aren't stuck with the candy :)

  • I figure you'll never know.

If you don't want it hanging round the house, then put it out. Someone will enjoy it. That might be one person, or a whole heap of people, but someone will enjoy it and you really don't need to concern yourself.

  • I would just leave it out. Could you put it in a really cheap bowl so incase someone does take the whole thing it wouldn't be a big deal? I doubt anyone will take it, though.
  • I have put it out before. You might get an older kid who takes it all but they're usually out later anyway so the little ones will already have been there. I agree w/ PP though, don't put out a bowl you care about (I'd use a large disposable ziploc container or something) in case someone takes it.
  • We put out a bowl of candy every year while we ToT in our neighborhood. Most kids are with their parents, so I assume they only take 1 or 2 pieces. There's always candy left when we get home.

  • My SIL did that last year and the 2nd set of kids took the whole bowl .... she found it thrown in a neighbors yard.  But if you think you live in a good neighborhood with young kids then it's worth the risk.  She won't do it again.

  • Hubby's out of town, so while I' m out with my kids, and after they go to sleep I am actually going to line our monsterous jack o lantern with cellophane and put the candy in it and make a sign.

Well that's the plan.  We'll likely be rained out and I'll be stuck with all the candy.  Ah well.

  • I live in a neighborhood where it seems like two families monitor the children and the rest of them are seemingly allowed to roam free. We put the candy out last year and there was still a bowl mostly full of candy when we returned, I think it will be fine.  One way or another you'll get rid of the candy :)

I plan to stick it in a ice cream bucket on my porch while I TorT with my older girls.
