The Best "Baby Backpack"

...for lack of a better term :)

What's the best you've owned? We are going to register for one and would like real people opinions. I'm assuming the ones that carry the child on your back are more comfy for women? Let me know!

  • It depends on what you're using them for, but be aware that you won't back carry for a while.  If you're a hiker, you may want a very different style than if you're just using it here and there instead of the stroller.  I would suggest one that gives you a lot of carry options (front, back, hip).  I've heard great things about the Boba, Ergos are popular, and I think Baby Hawks allow for back carry and are less structured.  I have a Beco which I like, but I'd suggest the Gemini model over the Butterfly model (I have the Butterfly and it just doesn't have as many options, but allows for a heavier child- heavy to the point where I wouldn't want to wear them at that weight anymore!).

I'm sure there are some ladies here that know more about various brands than I do.  If you're looking to register at the regular baby sites (BRU/BBB), you may not have a lot of options and of the ones I've seen on their sites, I'd lean towards the Ergo.

  • For babies I wouldn't back carry till about 6-12 months. When they are little you need to carry with them facing you in the front. I like my Ergo. You can do many carries with this thing. However, in the very very beginning you will need an insert since a lot of the structured carriers weren't meant for tiny babies.

  • If you mean one of those hiking backpacks we don't have one so I cannot help. But if you just mean a carrier - the ergo sport is awesome. You can wear the baby on your back, chest or side although I never did figure out the side carry.

Love my Ergo!  I didn't get it until DDs were about 1, but I've used it a ton and still occasionally carry DDs comfortably on my back in it (31lbs and 36lbs)

  • For an actual hiking/ backpacking / camping adventure pack you want the deuter kid comfort III. Seriously. It's awesome.

  • I like my Moby Wrap. You can do TONS of different carry options with it. And yea, you won't back carry until maybe 8 months to a year. Its just not safe. Ergo's are extremely popular and I hear nothing but good things. I'm thinking of getting one  myself just for the convenience of having something that is quick to put on (the wrap takes some time to figure out)
