Does a ham you cook count as deli meat?

I get so confused.  I do avoid deli meat because people have made such a big deal about not eating it - so I haven't.

I bought a ham at the grocery store - like the kind you'd make at Easter... it's precooked, like most of them are, and you cook it again for like an hour or so to heat it all the way through (it's only 1/4 of a ham). This is safe to eat right?

Which brings me to my next question, if I wanted to eat this ham on a sandwich the next day, do I have to heat it again?

  • Yes, it's safe to eat, and no, you don't have to reheat it tomorrow for a sandwich!

Haha I like your attitude :)  I don't freak out about anything so far when it comes to this pregnancy but people always make me nervous with the darn deli meat. I was fine with doing this but then a friend who was visiting told me it's a "judgment call" and made me feel like it was a bad idea. <sigh>

What about this same scenario but with Turkey the day after thanksgiving?

If leftover turkey is wrong, I don't want to be right Stick out tongue

In all seriousness, it's the processing that can potentially introduce listeria to lunchmeat, so as long as you're practicing good kitchen safety, anything you cook and store properly will be fine.

  • Well.. technically, eating left over ham without reheating really isn't any different than eating lunch meat without heating. Just something to consider. And I'm definitely NOT saying, "don't eat it." If anything, I'm more team, "if you want some lunch meat, eat ya some lunch meat" .. LOL. BUT I know everyone has their own comfort zone when it comes to this kinda thing.

With that being said, I've never avoided lunch meat while pregnant. (My midwife even told me it wasn't necessary to totally avoid it as long as I use good judgement when it comes to WHERE I'm buying it from.. she told me to just avoid "yucky" looking places, which is a given.) And I am a left over cold Thanksgiving turkey/Christmas Ham sandwich junkie. ;);)

  • You take the time the next day to make the ham into a sandwich?? Ha. I never make it that far; I just grab some and start eating. I used to get in trouble because I'd make my own special container of ham in the fridge when we'd put away leftovers so that I could just pull out my container & start eating without pulling out half a ham. :)

They should both be as safe as any other leftovers so long as you cook & store properly.

No, that's not true.  The meat is not an issue in and of itself.  It's not the meat or the cold that makes it go "bad." It's the processing part of making lunch meat that introduces bacteria, like a PP said.

Hm. My bad. I was under the impression that any thing that was already heated can grow bacteria once it is cold again.
