Babies on the Brain

If I name my baby

Kate (just Kate...hate the longer names), am i going to constantly be asked "really, just kate?"? And exactly how annoying will that be?
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

Re: If I name my baby

  • I have always liked the name Kate.

You probably will get asked that, and she definitely will once she gets a little older.

Still, if you love the name go for it.

  • It's not annoying enough to warrant changing it IMO.
  • I have a friend who named her daughter Kate, and just gave her a longer 2 part middle name. She felt it made up for it lol. I think it's a very pretty name. If you are worried, you can name her Katherine and just call her Kate all the time!
  • I love the name Kate as well.  Whenever I think of it for a kid, I always begrudgingly think of the "long" name I would hate the least.  I say you start the trend and go for just Kate.  :)
  • My brother's name is John, just John, and my sister's name is Jessi. People are constantly calling them Jonathon or Jessica. It's really annoying, but not if you don't mind saying "Just Kate" all the time. It's a pretty name though for what it's worth from a newb. Smile
  • I love the name Kate.  Go for it!

  • I have known a couple of "just" Kates, and they DO have to answer that question a lot, but if you like the name-do it!

It is a really nice name.

  • I've known a few people who've used just Kate as a middle name (Evelyn Kate and Emma Kate). I don't think people would ask whether she had a longer name. I think she'd have the opposite problem if she was named Katherine and went by Kate. She would have to correct everyone when they used the longer name. Going ahead and naming her Kate would make it easier, I think.

Honestly, I'm with you on this one. Dh and I are the same way about Ben vs. Benjamin. The shorter name is just better!

  • Just Kate, and no longer variation, is getting to be really popular around here!

  • Yes but go for it anyway.  It's such a pretty name.

My sister is "just Beth" not an Elizabeth and she and my mother lived through it happily.

  • I think Kate is super cute---no need to have it longer if you don't like it that way.  I have a nephew whose name is Will--just Will not William and a niece whose name is Jessie---not Jessica or anything and I like it!  I also like the name Allie and not Alison.
  • Lurker here...just wanted to say that my friend named her baby just "Nate" five months ago and all seems to be going well! :) go for it!
