Horrible Sleeping Issues

I have a 9 week old boy and we have the most difficult time getting him to sleep! He screams and cries until he eventually falls asleep. Nap times and bed time is like this every.single.day. I am getting worn out physically and emotionally and so is my baby. I've tried everything gripe water, sleep schedules, co-sleeping, bouncing, car rides, etc. Once I eventually get him to sleep and put him down he will wake up screaming 15-20 minutes later then it is a fight to get him back to sleep. When he falls asleep for the night he will wake up about one time for a feeding and go right back to sleep. Has anyone gone through this before? Do any of you have any suggestions of what to do or what could be going on?

  • This sounds like our baby exactly! I don't have any advice but I'm interested in hearing what others have to say. GL!

  • How long is he awake before you try putting him down to sleep again?  At this age they can really only be awake for short periods of time - 45 min to an hour max.  If he is overtired it will be even harder to calm him and get him to sleep.  Do you swaddle?  I would definitely try swaddling if you don't.  He will fight it at first but keep trying it.  Do you use a pacifier?

Have you read The Happiest Baby on the Block?  I really recommend this book for calming fussy babies and getting them to sleep.  The 5 S's are highlighted: swaddling, shushing, swing (or any movement), side lying (in your arms or lap), and sucking.  I have found that shushing and bouncing at the same time are the easiest and fastest way to calm my LO.  Shush very loudly and continuously right in his ear while bouncing him up and down.  The shushing needs to be louder than his crying and you can slowly decrease the volume once his crying lessens.  Once he isn't screaming or crying, try using a pacifier - keep shushing and bouncing and slowly decrease all of these movements until he is calm.

I hope this helps!!  Good luck!

  • Do you have a bedtime routine?  Now is a good time to set up a loose routine for LO.  At that age we did bath, swaddle, book & bottle and rocked her til she fell asleep. Somes it took 1/2 hr to go to sleep and other times it took 2-3 hours.  The big thing is to keep at it.  Also, something else we did that totally changed LO sleeping habits was the EASY schedule.  Eat, activity (playmat, tummy time, walk, pretty much anything awake activity) then after about 1-1 1/2 hrs put her down for a nap where ever she usually naps (we do the swing).  Look for cues like yawning.  If she has trouble just going to sleep on her own for a nap try the side-hold.  This works GREAT for us and she did well at it at your LO's age, too.  I stand up and lay her horizontally across my belly (belly to belly) and put one arm through her legs and the other under her neck area and sway really hard back and forth.  I'd put a paci in if she'd take it. She'd fuss for a few min or so...sometimes 10 mins but I could see she was getting tired.  Once I discovered these things my life got SOOO much better.  Try it. Hope it works for you!

  • Oh, and the Y in the EASY schedule means YOU TIME! Yes, you will get some in order to nap or shower! I promise, it'll get better!
