Question about hydrocortisone and eczema

Last night there was a post about eczema where a few people mentioned not putting hydrocortisone on their LO's face. Did anyone's pedi tell them that? Our pedi said it was okay on the face - just not for more than 5 days in a row, because it could cause skin thinning or something like that. Just curious what your pedi said about it on the face and what you use instead if you don't use it on the face. Our little guy's cheeks are the worst patch!

Re: Question about hydrocortisone and eczema

  • Just at the Pedi for this yesterday for both girls. None on face. Okay on body twice a day for up tp 2 weeks.

  • hydrocortisone is a steroid, that's why you should not use it on their face or hands, it makes it easier to get in their eyes, nose, mouth.
  • I have a prescription steriod and the MD is okay with it on the face, but as a pharmacist I rarely use it there unless it gets really bad.  Too much medication gets asorbed into the body when you apply it on the face because the skin is so thin.  As I tell all my patient's go with the advice from your pedi, but if your really concerned call the office tomorrow to double check sometimes MD's don't always communicate things properly.
  • I've put a teensy amount on DD's face before, but I wouldn't do it regularly. Maybe try a layer of Cerave or Cetaphil with Aquaphor on top to seal it in?

    I have been told this
  • DD's eczema has cleared up everywhere except for her face.  We have a prescription cream from teh dermatologist that we can put on her face but have to be extremely careful to not get it in her mouth or let her get her hands in it till it has sunk in a bit.  We are only able to go three days using it and then we have to go three days off.

Ugh, someone else told me that one time too. I did not realize that's what he called his daughter- people on my softball team used to call me that. They must have been fans of their show Indifferent Not exactly who I want to be affiliated with lol

  • I will put some cortisone cream on DS's face if he gets a really bad patch.  But I mostly put Curel lotion after baths to keep eczema at bay.

  • I used Gentle Naturals Infant Eczema Cream (can find at Target) and it worked AWESOME.  No hydrocortisone and it cleared up in a few days!  GL!
  • Aveeno Baby is awesome for eczema.  I use it for my eczema. They have the stick so you don'y have to worry about too much lotion in the face too.

  • Crap. Our pedi said to use a tiny bit on his cheek up to 2x a day if necessary.

    Now I'm worried.
