Nap time hell

I am losing my mind! I know a lot of us are. I need help. We have been transitioning out of swaddle- he woke up twice with it around his neck tight- and is it thus gone. Night one was tough but he's been a trooper and overall it's going well- at night.

Naps are a whole other beast. He literally will not nap. Like seriously at all. He just screams bloody murder. I've rocked him and put down fully asleep and tried drowsy but awake- makes no difference within 10 min he is screaming. We do the exact routine at night as naps. why is he fighting it so hard with naps. I need some help! I work part time from home and I can't get a darn thing done if he won't nap this cannot go on.   BTW he will sleep in arms ( of course!) but yet again this will not work because I have a million things I need to get done while he naps. Thanks ladies!!

Re: Nap time hell

  • When we attempt the unswaddle fiasco we are going to give him a lovey, he has a Tigger that he adores, so he has something to hold onto with his hands.

  • Oh man, I hear you. My DS has turned into a champion nap fighter. Two days ago it was so bad, I screamed into a pillow. Even the early weeks weren't that bad. He fought the morning nap, but eventually fell asleep. He fought the noon nap so bad that even though he slept a little, it wasn't enough and he fussed all day, for the third day in a row. It seems that ever since the 3 month hormone regulation, I just can't handle the fussing as well. The sound drives me crazy. And since I don't cry as easily, I have a harder time releasing the tension, hence the pillow scream. Things that would have sent me into a sob fest before just make me really angry now. It was all I could do to not punch out the door on our wardrobe when I finally had the idea to scream into the pillow.

I'm also trying to work part time from home, and I have a few deadlines looming, which doesn't help the stress when he's not napping regularly.

We haven't swaddled for a while, but the usual nap routine is failing just the same. He's in the rnp next to me now, fussing. He almost fell asleep several times. He's refusing his pacifier, which used to help him go to sleep. He's at least more calm now, the fussing isn't as insistent or constant, but no sleep yet. I had him in my arms for a while. I even let him nurse some more to see if that would help him sleep. Nope.

Two days ago, by the afternoon, I just put him in the bed and laid down with him to nurse him to sleep. Whenever he woke up, I laid down and nursed again. That at least got us two and half hours of nap, but I got nothing done. Yesterday was better, and so is today, but we're not back at a normal nap schedule and the deadlines are just getting closer. My best work time is in the morning, so it's really hard for me to get enough done in the evening when DH can take DS for a little while.

I'm sorry I don't have ideas. Actually, my dad jokingly suggested giving him some wine to help him sleep. I said maybe I should give myself some wine, and it was nice. I'm nursing so I have to be careful with how much I have and the timing, but it is nice to have a small glass of wine.

  • This sleep thing is a b*tch! Dd is also having some serious sleep issues.  However, her issues are mostly regarding night sleep, ugh. Anyway, as far as naps go- I read that babies this age should only be awake for 1.5-2 hr stretches between naps. Once I started paying attention to this, I would put LO down before she could get overtired and its been a lot better for her. It's just a thought, but maybe it will help:)

We try that, and it use to work really well. Quite time starts after 1-1.5 hours of awake time. I take the toys away and he moves to the rnp or just hangs out on my lap. He then generally chills for about 10-20 minutes. When he gets fussy after that, I start offering the pacifier and lovey. He used to open his mouth to take the paci, hold the lovey against the side of his head, and go to sleep.

Now, he holds his lips closed, refusing the paci, while fussing louder, and gets mad at the lovey while trying to shove the whole thing in his mouth, or ignoring it completely while flailing. The only thing that quiets him is picking him up and holding him upright so he can look around and continue to be not asleep.

Even the k'tan, which used to be our magical fall asleep place, doesn't work. I wrap him up and then I have a screaming baby tied on to me. That doesn't help the stress level much.

At least he sleeps well at night (knock on wood).

  • My kid has been a terrible napper for the past two months. He goes down just fine at night, but naptime is a different story. He'll fall asleep while nursing, but if I try and put him down he wakes up instantly. So we do one of three things: 1) either he nurses to sleep while I use the Breast Friend pillow, and once he's asleep I unlatch him, he sleeps on my lap on the pillow and I have 30-40 minutes of down time to Bump or read while he sleeps 2) plan our day around running errands around at least one nap time- he'll fall asleep in the car, or 3) pop him in the Beco and go for a walk. Or do chores while he's in the Beco. It's not ideal, but I tried everything and this is the what works for us right now.

  • Well it's a little comforting to know I'm not the only one who can't get her baby to sleep ! Sometimes I feel like its me, like I have no idea what I'm doingwhich I don't ha. Thanks ladies and I hope we can all get through this quickly
  • I have literally researched everything out there to get my baby on a regular nap schedule and nothing worked.  I finally came to the realization that my baby is just not a napper.  He takes about an hour nap in the morning and then a few 30 min naps (maybe) in the afternoon.  He likes to be up and see all the action.  He will only take a nap in the swing.  I would suggest putting your LO in the swing and with white noise.  My son will wake up if he hears any noises.  BTW, what is the 3 month hormone regulation?
