? for those with older kids

My kid has just started sleeping well and it was such a journey to get here. Please tell me what happens at night during potty training. I know it is some time away, but does sleep go away again with midnight potty breaks. I'm really not trying to sound like a dumbo, but please just tell me what happens in the next couple of years.

Re: ? for those with older kids

  • Liam potty trained right around 2. But, he still wears a pull-up at night. We tried taking the pull-up away a few times but kiddo could not sleep. It's become a security item of sorts. He NEVER pees in it anymore but he feels like he needs it.

For my child, who is 3 1/2, he peed in his pull up at night until a little after 3 years old. He wakes up now to go potty by himself. Sometimes he will come in my room in the middle of the night and tell me that he went potty and then ask me to tuck him back in.

At 3 am, the other night, he came in my room and said, "mommy, I had to peepee so I took myself to the potty. I had really bad aim and made a beautiful water mountain". (Water mountains are water fountains.)

  • Hank will be 3 in January.  He's been PT'd for a little over a year.  He has never once woken in the MOTN to pee.

It did nothing to his sleep.  Although, he's NEVER been a good sleeper.  He has STTN maybe a dozen times or so.

ETA:  Meaning, he doesn't pee overnight.  He holds everything.  My nearly 4 year old nanny kid also doesn't wake to pee.  He holds everything until morning.

  • Newly potty trained kids do not usually wake at night to go pee. You put a diaper or pull up on them at night for a long time. Usually by the time they are night trained they can use the restroom independently. But they will still occasionally wake you up because of accident, bloody nose, bad dream, etc.

  • When we first PT'ed DD1, we kept her in a diaper for naps and at night time. Then we ditched those diapers, too. At first, DH and I would get her to go to the bathroom before we went to bed (she would only half wake up, pee, then be sound asleep again even before we brought her back to her bed).

There was a time that she would wake up in the middle of the night and cry for us to come and take her to the bathroom. Luckily, a sticker chart was all it took to solve that issue. She does wake up during the night some (most) nights but goes to the bathroom on her own. I only find out in the morning when I go and see the bathroom door closed (we leave it open for her, but she always closes it behind her).

I am not sure why she gets up at night to pee, though. we don't give her anything to drink after dinner (so past 6-ish), which is 2.5 hours before bedtime. I guess that's just the way she's wired...
