Those who are on thyroid meds...I'm hungry!

I just started taking medication for it a few days ago. I know I cant eat for an hour after taking it but WHY? And what happens if I do?

Since I'm also hypoglycemic now, sometimes I cant just not eat. Especially in the morning. I've been waking up an hour earlier every morning to take it before ds wakes up so I can spend the hour relaxing so that I don't start feeling sick but that's a pain because I sleep crappily enough as it is.

I'll be asking the dr at my next appt but that's not until the 29th.

  • i believe there is a wait so that the medication can be absorbed into your system completely...

about a year ago with the infertility clinic, they realized i had an underactive thyroid, which was part of our problems ttc...so i've been on meds for a while now....it was no problem in the beginning because i'm not much of a breakfast girl, but when my morning sickness kicked in, it was horrible...i would take it as soon as i woke up hoping i could keep it down before i was able to eat anything...there were quite a few times i threw up the pill...i had asked my endocrinologist if it was ok if i had just like, a cracker or a small little something to quell the nausea...i figured i might get more of the meds in me that way instead of throwing it all up....

i would also ask your dr about maybe taking it at night..my dr mentioned it, but the nausea went away...and i know my cousin had the same issue and her dr said she could take it at night before going to bed....

  • I take synthroid so not sure what you are on.  But with mine I only have to wait 30 minutes if you do not wait I get very sick mimics morning sickness.

  • They want you to wait a minimum of 30 minutes [with an hour being more ideal] to aid in absorption. When I was in my 1st trimester it was more difficult to wait so I asked the pharmacist and they told me you won't actually hurt yourself if you eat something but you will not be receiving the full benefits of the medicine.

If you must eat something make sure you're choosing wisely - there are some foods better not eaten until after 4 hours to guarantee you've absorbed the medicine.

  • It's to aid in the absorption, what I do is set my alarm for an hour or two before I get up, take it and just go back to sleep. That way I'm not awake and waiting to eat, and two it gives my body plenty of time to absorb it.

    This!

I was diagnosed with autoimmune thyroid disease back in August 2011 (they couldn't officially figure out if it was Grave's or Hashimoto's Disease).

I've been taking 50mcg of Levothyroxine since about November 2011 and waiting at all to eat in the morning made dealing with my m/s impossible (I had m/s until 20w).

The real deal is to take it on an empty stomach first thing in the morning with a full glass of water.  My pharmacist said 30 minutes minimum but I don't really *have* to wait an hour.  Also, he mentioned it is about consistency, so if you take it with water always take it with water... if you take it with water and then drink black coffee, do that.  It is how your body gets used to the supplementation of the hormone and how to use it.

Like PP, the real trick (if you can make it work) is take it during one of your early morning bathroom trips so by the time you wake up you can eat.  Cheating the system Wink...

  • Don't worry about it! Eat something! I have never been told when/how to take it and I've been on levothyroxin (same as synthroid) for almost 15 years with perfect numbers. It's such a slow-absorbing medicine anyways. I take it at night, since that's when I take all my other vitamins, etc. and then everything sits in your body for a good long time if needed. If they feel your absorption is an issue-which would take some time or testing to figure out-not just a few days, then follow their rules. Otherwise it is not going to do anything to you. It's probably one of the most un-reactive/non-harmful treatments you can have to do. My Endo says if I ever have to up the dose, I'd just take an extra pill or two at the end of the week, if that tells you anything on how slow it absorbs into your body. I've missed days of not taking it due to slow refills or whatever, and it has never had any affect on results.
  • Thank you, It's good to know all of this!

When the endo called me and told me to go pick up the medication he didn't even mention anything about not eating but the pharmacist made it sound like terrible things would happen if I did it wrong.

  • I've been on levothyroxine (synthroid) for years... I just take it on one of my early morning trips to the bathroom as someone else suggested then go back to sleep. Or I just slam water as much as I can to fill my belly for an hr.
