birth announcements

Lo is still in the NICU and is doing well. I'm thinking about sending out birth announcements- although a little late at this point. Maybe take a cute picture of her with a 2 month sticker on her onsie (her 2 months is soon approaching, I can't believe it!).

Everyone who is going to get them knows that she has been born. A few have visited in the NICU, but most have not. And I don't want a parade of people at the house once she gets discharged because i'm anxious about germs so I figured this would be a way to get everyone a recent picture and say thanks for all their support.  Did you send out announcements late or not at all? What are your thoughts?

Re: birth announcements

  • We did birth announcements for both of our girls. With my first the hospital had a photographer come in the day before discharge and take some pictures, we got a cd and I just used one of those pictures. For C we had newborn pictures taken with a photographer in our home and I got them out around 2 months old.

  • We didn't just because we never found the time to do it. I wish we did though. We probably would have sent a picture of the twins after they both arrived home. We did email a few pictures to everyone shorty after their birth.

  • I sent ours out right after the boys turned four months old. It was late, but for me it was reclaiming a right of passage I had missed out on. I just put "finally announcing the birth of", everyone thought it was cute and funny. I'm so glad I did it.

  • I did one when she was a few weeks old. I really wanted to, it made me feel more like a new mom, and less like a NICU  mom, to do something "normal"  if you KWIM. I just chose a picture that we had taken that was sort of at an angle so her feeding tube was less noticeable, and sent it out. Everyone who got one already  knew she was here and was early, so I felt good sharing it.

  • I actually ordered our announcements while he was still in the NICU (towards the end of his 40 day stay) and sent them out within a week or two of him coming home, so he was about 2 months actual when they went out.  We had a pro photographer come to the hospital and take some pics of him at about 4 weeks old (he had lost his feeding tube by then) and I used those for the annoucement...I'm so glad we did the pics AND the annoucement...like a PP mentioned, it was one of those 'traditional' baby things I was not willing to give up!  And I definitely think if you want to send, it's better late than never!

  • We had photos done after my daughters homecoming and sent out announcements with birth and homecoming stats and photos.  The announcements didn't go out until she was almost 6 months old.  I dont think there are any "rules" to follow here... do them however and whenever you would like :)

  • Our LO has been home for 2 weeks, we are having a newborn photo shoot this weekend and I will be using one of those pictures to send out an announcement. All of our friends already know she's here, but I am doing it more for me :) because I found one I love that says "on (baby's birthdate) the world got a little more awesome" and you know what? It did :) so I'm getting them and sending them out!

  • There are no rules about when it is ok to send out birth announcements for a preemie. And, if someone has a problem with you sending out a late birth announcement, they need to see a surgeon to remove something you know where. :
We sent out an announcement card with Adalyn's name and birth stats, inside said Thanks for the thoughts and Prayers, and the back had a pic of the day we brought her home. We did this when she was 6 months old and included the most recent pic on the front. Everyone loved it! It felt really good to send them out. :

  • I bought birth/welcome home announcments on etsy from FourHarpDesigns seller.  It looks like she's on vacation, but she's worth the wait.  Very reasonably priced and easy to work with.  A link to a sample of the design we used is below.

  • And if someone tells me how to post a jpeg image, I can post Julia's actual announcment for a few hours (I would then delete due to personal info being on it).
