So, I've actually toyed with the idea of hubby and his dad building a co-sleeper to attach to the side of the bed for when baby is little. Tonight when asked by some friends what we plan to do for a crib, I mentioned possibly building the co-sleeper and then getting a crib. DH turned to me and said, "Dad and I could probably build a crib, too."
I didn't say anything. It makes me nervous. I feel there's probably a lot less to building a co-sleeper bassinet than building a crib. I mean, they recall the professionally made ones all of the time over things they didn't plan for happening. DH and his dad do build things, but not super nice things. They built our bed frame. It's particle board and 2x4s which isn't bad, but it's super simple. Sturdy, but not complex.
Have you built your own crib? Do you know anyone who has? Is it very do-able?
Re: DIY Crib?
That said lol if they are good craftsmen and you're confident it'll be sturdy and meet the current safety regulations, id say go for it.
That's just my opinion tho.
If they really want to, I'd say let them try. Get the most current standards and measurements, so that you don't have to worry about spacing between the rails, etc. Safety first!
If it doesn't work out you can always buy a crib from IKEA for them to "build".

My dad is a woodworker and built our crib and dresser. He used these plans
https://www.woodmagazine.com/woodworking-plans/furniture/kids/3-in-1-bed-for-all-ages/
and the company that makes the plans had the hardware and adjustable spring base thing available for purchase also. He even made a 3-in-1 convertible one so we'll have it for a long time.
It's the most special thing he's ever made, IMO.
