1st Trimester

Totally Excited - And Confused!

We are brand new at this. And by brand new I mean we weren't even going to really start trying until November. Happy surprise.

Some back story - Last week I took 2 Target Brand hpt both had a faint line. After much research, I thought there was a possibility that I was pregnant, but I was not ruling out a evap line. This morning, I broke out a fancy digital one that reads "pregnant" or "not pregnant"...  Drum roll.... PREGNANT!!!! So, of course I have spent all day online at work researching. Here is where my confusion is... Sorry for the TMI -

We DTD on 10/2. I felt cramping that I took to be ovulation on 10/5. Maybe it was implantation. That was the last day that we DTD before I left town for a wedding. Here is the thing - when I enter in my date of conception (because we are 99% sure that is when it happened) I am getting information back that I am over 4 weeks along. It hasn't even been 4 weeks since we DTD... what is going on?

Re: Totally Excited - And Confused!

  • When I had my last son I went to the Dr. two days after I got a pos. test and they said I was 4 weeks along and We DTD 10-11days prior. I think that is just how it works...makes no sense but was the same for both my boys. We DTD twice with no condom and we got both my boys.

  • When dating a pregnancy, they count from the first day of your last period- so it adds 2 weeks on to the total.  They do this based on the idea that women ovulate on or around day 14 of the cycle (even though we now know that's not totally true) and they can't pinpoint conception (due to implantation times, etc...).

    Congrats!

  • The way I've thought about it is they count your egg as maturing starting the first day of your last period. So even if no sperm is in contact with the egg it's still one half of what becomes your baby. It is confusing sometimes but that's how they calculate. Usually they will do a dating ultrasound within the first 11 weeks (depending on your Drs office) that will be more accurate. Congrats though

As a rule of thumb, they date pregnancy from the first day of your last period, it is the day the egg starts maturing for fertilization. Plus most women don't know their ovulation date. Even though I know mine, they still use my LMP when calculating your due date and the age of the pregnancy.

    Congrats and good luck!

  • Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • the day the obgyn considers you to be is based on the first day of your last period. For instance, mine was Sept 4, 2012 but my ovulation week was the 17th-21st so technically the baby is only 5 weeks old but i'm considered 7 weeks. Does that make sense? it took 3 times explaining it to me to get it..LOL

  • The calculator on the bump (and most calculators, and the calculations your doctor will use) are based on your last menstrual period, not your date of conception.  So, as PP have said, the start of your pregnancy is considered to begin two weeks before conception.
