Intradermal flu shot

Has anyone got the intradermal subcutaneous flu shot when pregnant? It's a short needle that goes into your fatty tissue instead of muscle it's preservative free too, target is advertising it. I never got a flu shot and since i am pregnant now I am pretty sure I will have to get one plus my work is making it mandatory. I'm just looking at safe options

Re: Intradermal flu shot

  • I've not yet heard of this, but other than sounding like less painful because of a shorter needle, I don't think it's probably any "safer" than the one that goes into your muscle. It will still be going throughout your body.

I'm planning to get the flu shot, probably whichever one my OB offers.

  • Hi there!  Just wanted to let you know...the intradermal flu shot (Fluzone Intradermal) is safe during pregnancy and contains no thimerosol (which you want to avoid during pregnancy).  Hope this helps!!

  • Last time I was at the doctor, my doctor urged me to get a regular flu shot right then and there. I had never had one, and was freaked out and grossed out by it. I was also scared it would make me sick. I got one anyway, and aside from my arm being sore the next day, it was NBD... now, to convince my husband to get his...

  • I think as long as it is preservative free you should be ok. It will give you the same outcome (I could be wrong). I work for KP and had one today at our flu shot event. The one in the muscle was not that bad. It lasted a few seconds and right now I am just a little sore, barely noticeable.

  • I just got it done yesterday, and am 7mo. pregnant. It has about 1/5th of the amount of vaccine of the regular flu shot, but is just as effective.

It hurt a little more initially than the regular flu shot because they have to put a little more pressure on the needle, but the after-effects are soooo much better.

I do have a red lump (a common side-effect, i read) but a day later, I don't feel sore at all, and I don't feel "flu-y" or tired or achy in any way. I highly recommend it!
