Northern California Babies

Yep, more sleep training ?

We should open an Academy... No wait, scratch that... I don't even have the energy to make breakfast today.  UGH.

What was the other book you girls talk about.  Not the No Cry Sleep, Not the Ferber one, it's the one with the longer name?  I'm hitting up the library today.

  • It's called "Sit On Your Baby Until They Go To Sleep (But Don't Use All Your Weight Or You Will Crush Them)". It's a CPS fave.

  • OMG...LOL, the thought has crossed my mind.  I've also asked the dog to watch her, since he was up already.

  • is it the Healthy sleep habits, happy child? It's informative, but he's got attitude.

  • Yes that's it!  Thank You!

Bummer he's got attitude in it... I returned the Spper Baby Foods book for that reason, I couldn't even read it with a straight face.

I think I'll get all three books and just skim what I can.  Thanks Again!

  • I skimmed HSH,HC - I can't even type it :)

Since I didn't start it from an early age (got it around 9 months) - what I took from it was:

    1) Sleep begets sleep

    2) The more exhausted your kid is, the less they will sleep and they won't get restful sleep

    3) Look for cues and put them down - don't let them get exhausted.  It helps no one.

As soon as I put us on a more "rigid" schedule (we were on one, but it went away when the teeth came) her sleep improved significantly.  She actually started putting herself to sleep and went down earlier.

    Good luck!!

  • GREAT tips, Thank You!  I'm such a super meany about naps, and M's a craptasic napper... I feel bad because lately I've been shushing everyone around and kicking people out of the house right an left just so I can 'try' to get her down for a nap everyday.

I know this is probably just a sstage, but I really worry that we are string the training too late (she's 8mos now)  It's really good to hear that you've had success.  Thank You.

  • I didn't think he had attitude...I think your interpretation will really depend on your own personal views regarding babies and sleep. If you think inl ine with the author, you'll find it helpful. If you don't, you won't like it. Such is the same with any other book on the market. Personally I skimmed it and got the same as 3778, and found it helpful for our family.

  • I've honestly read every book, (well not every, but I've read 5+ sleep training books), and attended the sleep training talk at DO.

Not one thing worked for us. I will say that the information that I feel is beneficial to me was:

    1) sleep begets sleep

    2) create an environment that the child can re-create to put themselves to sleep. Essentially.. if they're used to being rocked to sleep, they won't be able to go back to sleep without being rocked (or fed, or with a paci, etc).

    3) For Jenna, if we went into her room, she wouldn't be happy unless she was in our arms. So going in to pat her back or calling to her from the doorway was a no go. It just made her angry and fuss louder or harder than ever before. So we treated it as this... if we go in, it's like we're starting the whole thing over.

    4) honestly, it took me weaning not to go feed her in the middle of the night. I just coundn't do it otherwise.

OMG.  THIS.  Word-for word. EXACTLY!  But even when she's in arms, she doesn't want to nurse.  The little stinker thinks it's playtime.  She'll giggle and be all cute and try to get to her books on the bookshelf and stare at the damn light (which is off) as if to say, Turn on the light Mama, I wanna P L A YYY!
