Are gift baskets really dumb?

I mean...i guess they are, or else i wouldn't have to ask...but seriously...are they?  Think like a harry & davids goodie basket or tower?  Or something from Southern Tasting or Popcorn factory? I mean it IS edible and those are usually popular gifts??? I'm stretching...i know.

Re: Are gift baskets really dumb?

  • Well, when you don't knwo WHAT to give, they aren't so bad.  Andy's mom gave us all this popcorn last year...now it was from Oprah's fav things and it was gourmet and not your average drug store tin....but we REALLY didn't need all that popcorn.  Its the thought that counts so no present is dumb...and someone will eat whatever is in the basket.....

I am thinking this year of giving some donations to a food bank instead of giving someone food who really doesn't need it and or possible even want it.

Who are you thinking of if you don't mind me asking....

  • Depends on who its for and what's in the basket. I've made gift baskets of homemade treats before. Its a little time consuming if you have multiple people to give them to, but its a more personal way to go if you want to go that route. Its also a lot cheaper than good quality baskets. I personally would love a homemade gift basket much more than the store-bought ones.

  • I like the yummy food ones.

I think last year I sent my aunt and uncle something yummy out of the Williams-Sonoma catalog.  This year I'm thinking Dean & Deluca.

  • I love stuff like that but I assume I'm the minority.  When I was a kid I used to ask my mom to get me one of those Pepperidge Farms gift baskets with the summer sausage and the little strawberry candies.  How lame is that for a kid??  And I wasn't even the fat kid then, haha.

I did used to love going into the Hickory Farms store for summer sausage samples!

  • See i like them too...i get all excited cause DH's work usually sends one every year. I like munchies, nuts, crackers..things i would never buy for myself but would totally eat (i guess that's not really a good thing).  Anyways, I was thinking of getting something for my hubbies Aunt/Uncle...they are in their 70s too and i just don't know what to get  them.  I was thinking some breakfast/tea time basket treat...they like breakfast and tea...but already have like a wooden tea box/case.  I'm at a loss.  I can always do a gift card too...seems about the same to me...but then they could buy whatever they want.

I think this is a perfect gift for them.  If they are tea lovers they can't have too much tea (just ask my DH!).

  • I think they are great gifts.  I love the harry and david baskets!
  • I think that would be a great gift for them.....esp with some cookies!
