2nd Trimester

When to Start Nursery?

I'm almost 19 weeks pregnant now. So, give or take, 22 weeks left. My BF and I work opposite shifts, I work days and he works nights. On top of that, he works every other weekend Friday - Sunday night. So the way I look at it is, I have 11 weeks left to get the big stuff in the nursery set up, so I can start the organization, etc.

As it is, I've already accumulated the pack and play, car seat, stroller, bedding, clothes, room decor, etc (my mom and I love to shop). I feel like it may be time to go ahead and buy the nursery furniture (BF and I are doing that together). I want everything set up before the baby shower January 12th so when I bring all the stuff home, I can actually put it away.

So, is 22-ish weeks too early to get started with furniture and room set up? Ideally, I'd wait until V-Day, but we also have the holidays and house decorations to put up/take down.

Re: When to Start Nursery?

  • I would definitely go ahead and pick out and buy the nursery furniture.  I know moms that waited too long and were down to the wire waiting for the crib to be delivered.  (Sometimes it takes a while).

  • It's really never to early. I painted the room (green) before I even got pregnant and chose gender neutral crib, rocker bookcase. Then when we found out the sex I went from there. Trust me by 30 weeks my energy was lacking and was glad I had already done the painting and hard stuff.

  • Start as soon as you can.  I started planning and knew what I wanted to do by 20 weeks and now I'm 33 weeks and just now am done enough to show it off.  But not done all the way that I wanted...  Moral - it's never too early to start.
  • I don't think there is a right time to start, so go for it!
  • I'm at 15 weeks and we ordered our crib last week!  :)
  • We are waiting to know the sex before we buy furniture. We have already have decor picked for a either sex.

I think its never to early to start planning and decorating your nursery.

  • We just finished our LO's room. We started when I was around 20 weeks. I don't think it's too early to start! Like PPs have said, sometimes the furniture takes awhile. Our parents bought our crib and dresser. My MIL said both of them were back ordered and then arrived damaged so we had to wait another 2 weeks before everything came in. That's definitely something to consider.

  • I started at 19 weeks after I found out the sex and I'm almost done, it feels great to not be rushing. I am taking my time doing DIY projects and whatnot. I strongly recommend going for it, I hate rushing!

  • We already purchased our crib and changing table. Next on the list is the crib mattress. The room that will be LOs room was being used for storage, so it's currently a big mess. I told DH I want an empty, painted room by his birthday, Dec. 31st. Ideally, I want the room finished 8-10 weeks before my EDD (3/28) so I have the extra time to tweak the room, wash clothes, organize (and re-organize). Personally, I'd start now if I were you!

  • I think anytime is a fine time go get started at this point.  My husband and I recently put together a crib for a very-pregnant friend, and you may find that there's a lot you can do with just your mom's help. As for V-day, I'm not super superstitious by nature, and you already have so many items, you have to put them somewhere. It makes sense that you're ready to see all that stuff organized.

I am just barely in my second trimester, but I already refer to the empty bedroom as the nursery, and the small amount of things I have accumulated are all in there.

  • I would rather get things done sooner ...I got soooo tired and was sick/not sleeping/miserable towards the end of my first pregnancy and there would have been no way I could have put together a nursery. I would rather do it now when I feel good and have the energy!

  • I would do it as soon as you can while you can. I wish I had mine ready but my mom has the furniture on lay-a-way and won't get it until late Dec, only a month before I'm due...I wish I'd atleast have the dresser before my baby shower so I can put stuff away. But I'd say the sooner the better so you wont be rushed in the end.
  • TBH, you don't "need" the crib until you're going to start having LO sleep in it, which *most* people don't do for at LEAST the first couple of weeks, so you do have extra time on that front.

I would wait til you find out the sex if you're going to, and if you're not, go ahead and start putting things together when you want. It took me several times to get what I wanted right.

  • We started as soon as we found out that we were expecting a little girl (around 16 weeks.)  I didn't order anything expensive (furniture) until we received confirmation that it was indeed a girl.

I definitely wouldn't wait.  You will not have the energy to do a lot later on.  Even now, at 26 weeks, I am easily overwhelmed and not wanting to do too much.

  • Thanks for the feedback, ladies. I JUST got my 2nd trimester boost of energy. I've been cleaning all day. I know I'm having a little girl, so I think it is time to get moving on her room. :)

I actually found my dresser last night - can't wait to have it delivered today! I got it at a tag-sale at my church. Smelled like wood, no scratches, looks brand new.

  • There is nothing worng with getting ideas of where you want to place everything.  If you want everything set up and done in the next few weeks go for it.  Have fun with this.

  • Ours is done (minus some washing left of clothes and sheets).  I will do the washing as we get closer so things are fresh.  As we are expecting twins, I wanted to be done by 26 weeks as movement and my comfort could go out the window sooner.  Plus I run a risk for bed rest.  Also our showers are next weekend and December 1st so I wanted the nursery ready for the stuff we receive at the shower.

I really think it is a personal choice depending on your comfort level physically as well as mentally.  I would just prefer to have it done and not hanging over my head.

Plus I think it also depends on where LO will sleep at first.  If it's your room then you have longer.  Ours will be in their rooms from the first day home.
