We attended a session at a Pediatric office a couple of weeks ago to start finding a pediatrician for our LO. We were told that we should be getting both the flu shot, and the TDAP shot (Whooping Cough) before caring for a newborn. I also never had the chicken pox, so I needed that one as well. It was difficult finding someplace to give these shots without charging an astronomical amount. Happy to report, we called our town's Public Health Department and the TDAP shot was free! I still had to pay $85 for the Chicken Pox vaccine and the flu shot I will do at our local pharmacy for under $20. Just wondering if any other new moms or about to be new moms are getting their shots as well.

Re: Good to know - anyone else getting vaccinated?
I remember I got the whooping cough shot in the hospital when I had DS and I had chicken pox when I was a kid. I always get the flu shot.
A weird thing for your LO, babies have to get 2 flu shots (at least where I live) about a month apart - last year our county ran out before the 2nd dose so this year he has to get 2, one last month and one in a few weeks. I had never heard or read about that, no idea if this is nationwide or what.
You won't have to worry this year though, I think they have to be 6 months old to get it : )
When I went in for my physical for our home study paperwork, my doc told me it was imperative that I get the TDAP should I be taking care of a little one anytime soon. I figure whooping cough isn't something to mess around with (I see enough patients with it at work) so sure, why not?
Hurt like CRAZY, though for 2 freaking weeks.
:::Our Adoption Journey:::
Evan James was born 1/24/13 and matched with us 2/20/13. The LOVE OF MY LIFE!!!
We had travelled to Africa prior to adopting so we'd been vaccinated for both.That said, when we adopted both of our girls, each hospital offered whooping cough vaccine free to all new parents
Good to remember!
As for- should you/shouldn't you... when DD1 was 17 days old, Christmas Eve no less, we had to admit her to the hospital. She had RSV but they had to do all sorts of awful tests... a spinal tap, etc. You do not want a newborn sick... so if you can prevent whooping cough, DO! RSV does not have a vaccine (a virus)... and that's scary but whooping cough is very scary!
Yes this is the one we got today. I am shocked it didn't hurt because Tetanus usually does, but my chicken pox one is a little sore.
Not every tetanus shot is the combo shot. In some ERs they're still giving just plain Td (tetanus) when people cut themselves. You should be sure the shot you're given is TdaP if you want to make sure you got the pertussis booster.
I used to work in a Peds office and this is normal practice.
Mother of two wonderful boys! Blessed through adoption.
