If you are currently employed, count your blessings. I thought my job was safe as I was not a noise maker and a good colleague. Good thing...I get 3 months severence and I have a crap load of PTO. So that takes me to about 7 months, around the time that I would have taken my leave.
I am pretty happy, I am pregnant and have a wonderful loving DH.
Re: Got laid off today
What kind of job and industry were you in?
I was a home based PM for a large information company. I had been there 2 years. And I have an excellent record, only 2 sick days this year. No HR complaints about me, never went into work drunk, etc. And I say this bc my counterpart still has her job.
I could be sadder, but I have so much to look forward to. I think Nordstrom rack got a new shipment.....(trying to be funny)
Sorry to hear that! I was laid off in Oct at about 16 weeks pg. I got no severance whatsoever but it was a small company so it didn't surprise me. I've been collecting unemployment and was able to switch to DH's insurance with no problems so at least that's a plus. I've been enjoying being a SAHM with my DD for the time being. We'll see what happens after the baby is born. (if I'll go back to work or not) I'm not optimistic I can get a job now while so obviously pg (plus I've heard back from no one of the jobs I have applied for...)
GL with everything!
OMG I'm so sorry to hear that but it sounds like you're covered for now, which is good. Can you get on your DH's insurance? That would be my biggest concern.
DH and I talk daily about what would happen if either of us lost our jobs. So far so good, but I never take my job for granted. You just never know what might happen. It sounds like you were one of the good ones - they'll miss you. Was it based on seniority vs. sobriety?
I think they thought if they did me, it would be easy and less of a headache. My counterpart really had an investigation by HR last year done by her.
Yeah, I am good for a small while, but now I am thinking insurance....if I buy Blue Cross, will they cover me for this "preexisting condition?" I hope so...its not terminal. If not, I have to buy Cobra or use DHs, which is super expensive.

Sorry to hear that.
I am not an expert, but I THINK that they can't consider your pregnancy a pre-existing condition here in CA. I could be wrong, but I thought someone told me that when they had a similar situation.
I am so sorry! You are not alone, and I feel your pain. I was laid off in August after surviving many rounds of layoffs throughout the year. Still havent found employment and its going to be increasingly difficult the more I show. It is definitely stressful.
Sounds like you received a really nice severance package though! I received a week
I live in Ca and I am fairly certain it is illegal to consider pregnancy a pre-existing condition
Btw, I love your positive attitude
Sorry to hear about your job situation, my DH went through it a few years ago. One of his co-workers was in a situation like yours and also ended up waiting til after baby to find a new job. She too was concerned about being able to get hired while PG. And wasn't hearing back on what she was applying for. In the end she found a great job after her son was born. A few friends are also going through layoff now. No fun!
but it does sound like you are looking on the bright side, and your severance is good.
In past experience it has actually been less expensive (even though a lot more then while employed) to continue COBRA than get coverage individually through private insurance co. like Blue Cross. I think they can't consider it a pre existing condition but not all poicies cover PG, etc...
I know that in my area Blue Cross has a pretty cheap plan aimed at people in their 30's (Simply Blue) but I know that that policy does not cover maternity care. A co-worker switched to it and decreased work hours after having 1st child. She didn't read fine print, ended up PG and back to work to get insurance coverage.
Well wishing you the best of luck in all aspects of your life.

Wow, This sucks~I was laid off on 11/20/2008 with no benefits at all. I have resumes everywhere and not a single freaking phone call. BF and I dont live together, and he was laid off from his eight year job as a senior corrections officer in October. I envy you ladies who have been able to go baby shopping, lol. I am in way conservation, survival mode. Good luck to you and to the rest of the unemployed folks out there.
Having trouble posting all of a sudden, so sorry if this posted twice.
I am 16 weeks, and I was laid off last week. Must admit, my first reaction was panic. But I did get a bit of severance that will take me almost through the rest of my pregnancy.
I am worried nobody will hire a pregnant woman over 40 right now. Do you have the same worries? What are your plans/strategy for employment?
Thanks.
