NBR: D.C/Maryland area moms?

We're moving! We finally got notified of our next assignment its changed 3 times in the last month...Missouri, Idaho, now Maryland. Anyone live in the area? I hear the schools around the base Andrews are crap and we need to live further out and commute in. That's fine but where? We will be renting since we will only be there for a year before DH retires.

  • Andrews AFB is in Prince George's County, right?

I'm in Maryland, but in Carroll County, which is a bit over an hour northwest of PG County.

  • I'm in Maryland as well, but in Harford County (North East of Baltimore).

I would probably look in Montgomery County  or even Howard County.

I would actually post this question on the Baltimore Nest Board and see if you get any responses.

  • Yep, I'm pretty sure that's the county. We are looking on a military rental website and there are a lot of house available in our price range...like 100...but since we don't know the area it's hard to know where to start. Schools are the big concern. We would have a lesser house in a great area/district. Moving a hard with school age kids. And we have less than 2 months before we leave.

  • Definitely post on the Baltimore Babies site.  There are a good amount of military families here.  I bet they'll have excellent advice.

  • We live close to Andrews in Calvert County.  I grew up in the area and recently built a house to raise my family here.  Schools are great!  We're in the central part of the county roughly 30 minutes away from Andrews with no traffic.  Not sure what the commute would be like on a work day, but I know people who work at Andrews that I could definitely talk to.  I work on the naval base in St. Mary's county.

  • I live in northern VA, and Andrews is in PG County.  You don't really want to live close to the base.

  • Is there a DC nest page? I'd go with that over bmore. Baltimore is not near PG County and DC and Baltimore are very different areas so a DC page would be best.

I live over the river in Fairfax Co. VA. On paper we have good schools. I have not heard good things about PG Co. Friends of mine fled south to Charles Co.MD. Traffic is awful in the area. So definitely discuss with your family and Realtor what is important ...commute, school, rent, etc.

  • A previous poster mentioned Montgomery and Howard Counties. Montgomery Co. would be an awful commute to Andrews. Howard could be rough too. Can you contact people that already work on the base? I'm not sure where you're moving from, but I cannot stress enough that traffic here sucks. You need to talk to someone who has experience driving from your ideal school district to Andrews.

I know there are thru lanes not open to every exit from Fairfax Co. VA to the AFB. I've never driven them during rush hour though.

  • I'm in Maryland (southern Maryland in Charles County).  Charles County wouldn't be too bad of a commute to AAFB except getting past 210.

  • Areas to consider: Waldorf (Charles County), Greenbelt (PG), Mitchellville (PG). Also post this on the DC Nest board. Although it looks like the board has moved or try the DC bumpie board.

     Good luck!

I found some military reviews online and read that Calvert Co schools are some of the best. I've looked at a few houses in Chesapeake Beach and North Beach so far.

No. VA is on our list if we don't find anything in MD. We were told to stay away from PG county. We have been told that Woodbridge is a good area. What about Montclair? Can you recommend any other VA areas?

  • DH was raised in Chesapeake beach. It has definitely gotten nicer over the years. Have you tried militarybyowner? Feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions. We are both very familiar with the area. DH said to look for something in Richfield station neighborhood if possible.

  • Also, Calvert schools are some of the best, if not 1, in the state and are ranked nationally. I truly believe its a wonderful place to raise kids. Both DH and I attended public schools in Calvert.

  • Yes, we spent a couple hours on there last night and we have another military rental site also. There certainly isn't a shortage of rentals around the whole DC area!
