First ultrasound (Ontario, Canada)

I've had one appointment with my family doctor last week at 4 w 4 d. It was just a quick informative appointment and she sent me for bloodwork. She referred ne to an OB and I have that first appt Oct 31. I also have a 11 week ultrasound booked for IPS screening. A friend suggested I opt for this test, because it means you get an ultrasound before 20 weeks. However, I've heard of alot of people getting an ultrasound between 7-8 weeks as well and often the heartbeat can be heard.

My husband and I would really like if we could get one then, because we are hoping to break the news to our family at 11 weeks, just before heading down south for a wedding! It would be quite obvious to everyone on the trip that I was pregnant not having a sip of wine all week long. I would just feel alot better about everything, having THE NEWS out before we go.

 When did you have your first ultrasound?

Due June 16, 2013. First time Mom. We are so blessed.

    I'm from Ontario as well.  Yes, the 12 week ultrasound is optional.  It is part of the IPS testing.  (Other ladies here will call it the NT scan).  Then the anomaly ultrasound is around 20 weeks.

    You typically don't get an ultrasound before the 12 week one unless there are concerns or you are not sure of your dates.  So for women who don't know when their last period was or have a history of loss or are having complications.

    Your OB will likely use a doppler to try and hear the heartbeat at your appt though.

    Edit:  I'm not sure how far along you are.  But the OB may not be able to hear the heartbeat on the doppler if it's too early.  Sometimes not before 10 weeks.

    Thank you so much. I hope we can hear the heartbeat on Oct 31. I will be 7 W, 3 D then. I am currently 5 W, 1 D. Tired is an understatement today and lastnight I couldn't sleep. I had the worst headache! And trust me, I'm not complaining. I am overjoyed with all these symptoms! I feel so blessed to finally be pregnant!

    I'm due June 16th.

    I'm also from Ontario.

    I have my first ultrasound on the 24th.  I will be about 8 weeks by then.  I am just now realizing it is early.  I'm not sure why I'm having it then ... they just booked it for me!

    I am getting the IPS screening which means I will get another u/s around 11 weeks.

    Hey fellow Ontarion

    I went for bloodwork at 4 weeks and am going for bloodwork again tomorrow (i'm about 7 and a half weeks now). My husband and I decided not to do the IPS screening and my doc said we can go for a growth U/S anytime between 8-12 weeks, so we are going at 10 weeks for one. She said they do this one to get an accurate due date and to make sure everything is okay. But after that one, I don't go for another one until January (18-20 weeks U/S).
