My mom's friend would like to sell us her crib mattress from her LO, who is now 2. Is buying a used mattress a no-no? We didn't put one on our registry bc we might be getting one from her. Should we put one on the registry, just in case? Thoughts? Opinions?
Re: Used crib mattress?
Sorry I mostly just lurk here but feel like I must respond. There is some research that indicates used crib mattresses can harbor fungus or bacteria, and may increase the risk of SIDS.

I would not take a used mattress under any circumstances.
I was given DS's mattress from his cousin. I know that they are a clean family, plus it is a waterproof mattress, so I wiped it with a Clorox wipe and let it air out before we put the sheets on it. I bought a new mattress for Baby Girl since DS is still using his mattress in the toddler bed.
I don't see how taking a gently used mattress from a trusted source is much different from reusing the mattress from an older child.
I guess it would depend on how well I knew the person I was getting the mattress from. Can you trust that they took good care of it? Do you think they would have let urine just soak into it without cleaning it?
And then I have to ask myself if I would buy a used mattress for myself. I probably wouldn't, so that would make me hesitate to do it for my LO.
Once again, I don't think there is anything wrong with it. I would take it if it was from a family member that I trusted.

I have re used our crib mattress, in fact it has a 25 year guarantee, the only info found on a relation btwn SIDS and used mattresses is not from and medical or "edu" websites. Of course when it comes to your LO you never want to take a chance, so do what your comfortable with. For us SIDS is not a huge concern with a crib mattress as none of our babies have gone into their cribs before one and this one won't either.
I'm sorry rockstarpups, I wasn't meaning to discredit anyone, BMJ is an open journal meaning anyone can publish on it w/o research, but this article was a researched article by a professor. In the article by DT it does say that "Insufficient evidence is available to judge whether this is a cause and effect relation". But I did not see the article by BMJ here before my pp so sorry again.
