MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In
Welcome! This is a check-in for moms who are/were on a dairy free and/or soy free diet due to their LOs intolerance. The check-ins will be posted every Monday morning on the Breastfeeding board and XP'd to the Food Allergy board. I will RP a link to the check-in on the Breastfeeding board on Monday evenings for the nighttime posters, if the check-in isn't on the first page of posts. If you'd like to join the group, just post an intro here and dive in!
QOTW: How about an update? How long have you been on the MSPI diet? How is your LO doing? Have you been able to reintroduce any diary/soy back into your diet?
Please check out the MSPI Moms blog for an archive of our previous check-ins
ETA: The blog is a bit of a work in progress. Feel free to offer feedback and let me know if you think it's set up okay.
ETA2: If you're on your phone, click on "MSPI Moms blog" to see the blog. It's hyperlinked, but it's not apparent from my phone [iPhone].

QOTW: How about an update? How long have you been on the MSPI diet? How is your LO doing? Have you been able to reintroduce any diary/soy back into your diet?
I've been on the MSPI diet now for over 11 months. I am really looking forward to challenging him once we hit a year, but the pedi GI is making us introduce one thing per month and dairy is last on the list. *sigh* We'll start with oats (he threw those up when they were introduced; he's never had an issue with my eating them), move on to soy in my diet, and then dairy in my diet.
LO is doing great and could not be a happier baby, but his weight has really stalled out. I'm sure it has a lot to do with the same reason I can't gain weight and that is the lack of easy fats and calories from dairy.
I am able to eat soybean oil, which is nice since places like Chipotle use those ingreditents and it has expanded my ability to eat outside the house.
I've been on the diet for about 7.5 months now. DD2 is doing great for the most part. Introducing solids has been a bit nerve wracking though. She had terrible vomiting episodes the last two times she had bananas. The allergist tested her to see if she's allergic to bananas, but it came back negative. So there's a possibility she has something called FPIES. Unfortunately there's no test for it, so we just avoid bananas for now and pray she doesn't react to any other foods.
As far as her MSPI goes, she gets gassy if I have a tiny bit of soy lecithin. She seems to be able to tolerate my having some soybean oil though. I haven't tried any type of dairy thus far. Although we went on vacation last month and I wasn't super careful about my diet some days, and she was fine. [I didn't have any obvious dairy, but a few restaurant meals I had probably had some hidden dairy].

I have been on the diet now for just about 3 months and DD2 is such a different baby then what she was before I started it. I will admit that I really don't like doing the diet...yeah it really sucks IMHO, but for her, I will do it.
At this point we haven't tried introducing anything into my diet to see how she does and we probably won't until she is a little older. She does tolerate soy oil/lechtin just fine so that really helps when eating out. I eat a lot of Wendy's and Subway when we go out to eat. Luckily for us, we are FINALLY getting a Chipolte here so I am really excited!

Hey ladies--
I have been on MSPI for 5 weeks now & DS2 is a different baby. Instead of the hours and hours of screaming at night, he is content 99% of the time. It's like night and day.
I have not yet introduced anything back into my diet. I did accidentally eat a spice blend that had hidden dairy & soy in it a while back & DS2 had a few specks of blood in his diaper the next morning, so I'm not optimistic about being able to eat anything like that for a while.
I was actually going to ask about soybean oil. It's never listed on the allergens! I've been avoiding it.

Glad you joined in and that the archives have been helpful!
I think it can be hard to determine oversupply issues vs MSPI sometimes. I was hoping DD2's symptoms were due to my OS, so I block fed until my supply was under control, but that didn't relieve her symptoms. So then I cut dairy and soy, and after 5 wks, her poop was back to normal and she turned into a super happy baby. So unfortunately, you just have to use trial and error and give it some time and see how she responds.
As far as the lactaid goes, that might help if it's an OS problem, as it would help her digest the excess lactose she'd be getting from taking in too much foremilk. But it wouldn't help if she really is MSPI, since MSPI is an intolerance to the protein in dairy, as opposed to the lactose (sugar). (You probably already knew that, just thought I'd mention it, as some people confuse lactose intolerance with MSPI).

That's great you've seen such a difference in your DS. It's such nice validation that what you're doing is working!
A lot of items that contain soybean oil or soy lecithin don't claim soy in the "contains ____" line because a lot of people who are allergic to soy can tolerate soybean oil and/or soy lecithin. The oil and lecithin aren't supposed to contain soy protein and the protein is what people are allergic or intolerant to. But there is a chance that a trace of protein is present, so some people who are very sensitive can't tolerate it.
I started out avoiding all soy, including oil and lecithin to give DD2's system a chance to heal and so I could be sure I wasn't exposing her to any soy at all. After like 4/5 months, I tried eating stuff with soy lecithin in it to see how she'd do and she became very gassy. So that was how I knew for sure she couldn't tolerate it. : /

I am dreading the holidays this year. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and food is a big part of that. We don't host it so it'll be really hard if I just have to bring my own sandwich while everyone else eats yummy food. At least it'll help with keeping my weight in check.
I have been thinking about this, too. It will certainly help with weight! I was thinking about hosting Thanksgiving just so I can make sure I can eat.
As for how we are doing, it hasn't been great. I have been dairy and soy free for 2.5 months. Her mood got a lot better, but poop was still problematic. I gave up nuts for a while with no change. I gave up eggs 3-4 weeks ago and that seemed to help. But then I took her in for her 6 month apt and she hadn't gained any weight. The doctor was not happy with it and asked me to do 2 weeks on Alimentum to see if we could get her gaining and her poop cleared up. I lasted 48 hours. I got her in to see a pediatric GI who said I could keep nursing as long as there was no really bad diapers and she gave me stricter guidelines for how much she needs to be eating to gain. She also told me to start solids.
Stupid me did not research starting solids for an MSPI baby. I gave her avocado. Three days later she broke into hives. I have been eating fake cheese and avocado sandwiches every day. Not sure if that could be part of the problem. Pretty much at a loss and I keep getting my hopes up for these various doctor's appointments to see if something can finally get figured out. She really liked eating food and I feel bad that I had to take it back. I hope delaying solids even more doesn't cause more allergy problems.
I have been on a near-TED for 2.5 months and TED for 4 weeks. DD was getting worse despite all my dietary restrictions. Her stool studies came back suspicious for lactose intolerance.
We started Nutramigen last week. She seems to be doing well. She has napped almost every day since starting Nutramigen, after not napping for weeks. She seems less agitated during and after her feedings. Her poops are starting to look like normal formula poops. All in all, I am feeling cautiously optimistic that Nutramigen agrees with her sensitive little tummy.
Hi all. Thanks shotzie for linking the blog in the post! It looks really good.
I have been on the diet for almost 5 months now. LO is good, just keeping my fingers crossed that eliminating wheat will keep us from having any more blood in his stools. I haven't tried reintroducing anything yet since we are still trying to figure out what he's sensitive to! I will probably wait until he's a year old anyway, this has been so much work that I'd be nervous about messing things up too soon.
metucker, what is wrong with avocados? I eat like 1 a day. And I thought his pedi suggested that as a potential first food, after banana (we haven't intro'd any solids yet).
My pedi and allergist recommend trialing dairy or soy every 3 to 6 months. You don't have to wait until 1 yr. It's certainly something to discuss with your pedi though and see what they recommend. You do want to give LO's system time to heal. Some babies can outgrow it between 9 and 12 months, some take longer.
When you trial dairy or soy, you'll just need to watch LO and see if their symptoms return. DD2 used to be insanely gassy, and she had green, mucousy stools that sometimes had specks of blood in it. When I've trialed soy lecithin, she got really gassy again. So I didn't go any further than that, since I figured her symptoms would get worse if I continued.
When her symptoms started, she was about two weeks old. We had pizza for dinner and the next day, her stools were green. For a week or two, her stools alternated between yellow and green. It seemed like they were green after I had obvious dairy, like ice cream. Pretty soon, her stools were always green and became mucousy and then came the specks of blood.
So a quick way to test it is to have a lot of obvious dairy and see what happens. But if she is MSPI, it'll take time for your system and her system to get cleared again. That's the rough part, you just have to see what happens.
If you have any frozen milk from before you changed your diet, you could use that to trial while you continue the diet. Then if LO has trouble, you just go back to nursing and your system is still clear.
Sorry that got really long!
