January 2013 Moms

Has your OB taken you off work before 36 weeks?

Top of the morning to you all!!!

As I was sitting in traffic this morning for nearly 90 minutes I was wondering if my doctor would take me off work before I hit the 36 week mark. I'm a Southern California resident and my commute for the last 5 weeks has increased from 55 minutes to almost 90 minutes, the time is longer if I have to get off the freeway to use the restroom. During these 90 minutes my back, side and legs ache and I'm not even in the 3rd trimester yet! Please do not take this as a rant...I know this part is to be expected and I wouldn't trade it for anything however if my doctor can take me off work sooner than January 2 I will be a much happy camper, maybe December 17?!?!?!

Have you found yourself in a similar situation with your current/previous pregnancies?

Re: Has your OB taken you off work before 36 weeks?

  • As long as your pregnancy is going fine, your doctor will likely not agree to write you out early.

You can, however, start your maternity leave early but that may take away from your time at home with the baby after you give birth. Add you might not get paid for it (that may or may not be an issue).

  • This is my first pregnancy... but my doctor doesn't take a normal, healthy pregnant woman off of work at all. She says you can work right up until you go into labor if you want. However, she does advise against more than 3 hours of travel after 36 weeks.

That being said, I am planning to work from home full time starting  December 17 (I'll be just over 34 weeks) until I go into labor. I just don't feel comfortable with making my hour-long metro commute (each way), plus walking through the icy/wintery streets of DC to get into the office, during that last month or so of pregnancy. Luckily my boss is okay with this. GL!

    Dear Baby Pacheco...
  • My doctor does not take you out of work unless there is a medical reason.  I will be working up until the day I deliver this little guy, God willing.  I want to save all of my time for after he arrives.

  • I had to quit work early because of pre-e and go on bed rest. I hope that doesn't happen this time, because I want all my leave for when the baby comes.

This. Although I think my doctor might say no more than 1 hour away after 36 weeks. I can't remember from my first pregnancy exactly what she said, since I didn't have plans to go anywhere anyway I didn't really care. I did work right up until DD was born and had no problems. Fortunately I went into labor on the weekend so didn't have to deal with work awkwardness. Smile

  • I will probably be going on "modified" duty at about 30 weeks.. if I can make it that long, but I am high risk and I'm an RN in the ICU. Modified duty basically means I do administrative stuff- so I still get pay/benefits/PTO accrual and don't have to cut into my leave etc.

I HATE traffic so I really feel for you. My 13 mile commute would be awful if I didn't hit the highway before/after rush hour traffic. I wonder if you could work out changing your hours with your employer? I find even leaving 20 minutes earlier drastically changes my commute.

As PP said, you don't want to cut into your FMLA. Are you familiar with Cali FMLA? I'm D.C. so I have no idea, but you should get familiar with it.

  • My doctor also doesn't take healthy pregnant women off work. With DD I worked up until the day she was born. If you are having issues I woudl talk with your doctor and employer to see what options you have.

  • I do know my doctor takes me off at 36 weeks however I'm not sure if she'll take me out before the 36 weeks with my long commute. I have an appointment tomorrow and I'll ask then! Thanks ladies!

Oh I'm very familiar with CA FMLA and if my doctor takes me out earlier this does not cut into my FMLA. One of the good things about being a CA resident.

I've talked it over with my boss and we're already understaffed therefore changing my hours is out of the question. I've only been able to change my hours for my monthly appointments.

  • I'm a FTM so I don't have any experience when it comes to your question. I do plan on asking if I can work from home in December...I'm also taking my 2 weeks vacation the last two weeks of that month since it doesn't carry over. My due date is January 5th so when my vaca runs out I will continue working from home until I go into labor.

I thought I heard Cali has great FMLA/maternity leave laws. GL, I can completely understand your frustration with the traffic- and discomfort. I think ours in DC is nearly as bad as yours in SoCal.

Yeah I was pretty surprised at how much time I get off!

The break down is - 4 weeks before my due date; 6 weeks after delivery covered under CA-SDI, 6 weeks Paid Family Leave and 12 weeks of FMLA, which runs concurrent with Paid Family leave.

Sometimes I wish I lived in Canada...they get a year off if I'm not mistaken!

Yes we do and I was just going to say that we can start our leave up to 17 weeks before our due date.  We get 55% of our salary paid to us by the gov't and some companies top that up.

I will be leaving work at 36 weeks.  I have a long commute and the weather will be bad then.

This is true only is you have worked enough hours the year leading up to your mat leave (600 hours) Luckily for full time workers they have, part time is a little trickier I think.
Because I am unemployed in the summers I took EI this summer, therefore when I go on Mat leave in January I only get Mat Leave pay until the end of June (which is still awesome I know).
I plan to go off work at 36 weeks. That gives me 2 weeks leading up to Christmas to get things prepared for the baby since I am due January 6th I don't want to worry about getting things ready right before.

  • Yes, at 34 weeks, because I had pre-e. If I didn't he would never have taken me out of work. And I don't get any time before giving birth from the government in PA.

  • wiht my first pregnancy my doctor took me off two weeks earlier, so at around 34 weeks.  It was because my Sciatica pain had gotten way too uncomfortable for driving, sitting in traffic and sitting long periods at my desk.  It was a good idea, because i was better able to control my pain while resting at home and it was only a two week difference.

  • Do you have any vacation days saved up?  I'm going out 4 weeks before my due date (NJ state disability allows this) and I have saved up 9 vaca days to tack on before that.

I have 10 days/2 weeks of vaca days that I've planned using before my ob takes me out at 36 weeks but with the holidays, traffic is going to be worse than it is now. I would love to go out at 34 weeks. The commute is uncomfortable now and I'm not even 30 weeks yet!
