bottle warmer?

STM's - do you need/use a bottle warmer?  I will be breastfeeding, but didn't know if I needed it to warm up stored milk?

Thanks!

Re: bottle warmer?

  • We didn't buy one until our child was almost 7 months old and were about to transition to sippys anyhow!  LOL  I LOVED it and wished I bought one sooner.  It only really works if you are pumping into bottles and storing in those though.  If you use the bags, then you still have to warm them up in warm water in order to get all the good fat off the sides of them to pour them into a bottle...so we probably wouldn't have really used it a lot at first anyhow.  My DH stayed home a few days a week and it was easier for him to use the warmer and I just left milk in bottles that I had pumped the day before.  The hard part about the warmer is making sure you don't overheat the bottle though.  They get really hot really quickly.  We played with a bottle of water for awhile until we perfected the temperature setting.  Also, not related, but a lot of FTMs don't know you can not ever shake breastmilk, you gently swirl it to mix in the fat, so just putting that on your radar if you've never heard it before. :)   Talking about breastmilk bottles reminded me.

  • This is one of those things that people are really divided on. I had planned on BFing, as well, but ended up pumping for 2 months (long story) and then switching to FF. I could not have survived without our bottle warmer. We used it to warm up the pumped BM, and then after we switched to FF and she spent about 2 months only drinking 1 oz every 20 min or so, we used it to keep the bottle warm for about an hour before throwing it out.

For us it was irreplaceable, but others describe it as a waste of money, so I think it's one of those things you don't know if you'll need/want until it's time. They aren't expensive, so I say get one just in case. If you don't use it, you can resell it.

  • I just used a Pyrex 2 cup glass measuring cup. Put water in it heated the water in the microwave and then put the bottles inside that. We will do this again with 2.

This - except we didn't even microwave the water, just used hot tap water in the glass and let the bottle sit in it for about 10 mins and then gently swirled the bottle so the fats in the BM would mix back in. The bottle warmer we got was horrible, always made the BM really hot which not only kills a lot of the good stuff in BM but is dangerouse for baby getting burns as well. Maybe if we had a better warmer but we had no issues with using the warm tap water. Then after it cooled I'd just dump it in the dog bowl so not to waste it lol!

Also - warm/hot bottles are not actually needed - it just depends on how you can get your LO to take it. Eventually we all drink cold milk and the sooner you start on it the easier it is to just grab a bottle and give it to LO. The only real reason to warm up BM a little is to get the fats to mix in again. With cereal and baby food we never warmed anything up either and was so much more convenient.

This is what we did too. I personally think that it's not necessary, but we are pretty frugal.

  • I BF and gave bottles while I wasn't there. DD took milk right out of the fridge with no issue so a bottle warmer wasn't a problem. We just ran the bottle under hot water to get the fat off of the side.

  • We never used one.  I pumped for about 6 weeks and we always gave him breast milk or formula out of the fridge- he never complained so we just stuck with what worked.  Hopefully baby girl will be as cooperative!

  • We breastfed for 14 months, but I still did use some bottles at home for when we had a babysitter or when I was traveling for work and had to be away from DS.  The warmers are not that expensive and super handy to have when you need them.
