? about Ergo

Hi! I really want the Ergo baby carrier. Is it worth the money? I have a Jeep front carrier I received from a friend, its a hand me down, Im assuming it was cheap. Its ok, nothing special.

Is there a significant difference between the Ergo and cheaper type carriers? Is it worth the money? Also, at what age would I not have to use the infant insert? Thanks!

Re: ? about Ergo

  • If I'm not mistaken the Jeep Carrier has a narrow base - meaning it doesn't offer knee to knee support.  Ideally a carrier should support baby as he would be held in arms - in a "sit squat" position with support to the knees and the knees a bit higher than the bum (instead of the legs dangling straight down).

The Ergo offers knee to knee support.  Baby would need to be worn legs in until he is big enough to safely straddle without overspreading - it depends on how your baby grows but normally by 4-5 months.  The insert is needed in the Ergo to make it snug enough for a small newborn.

I have info on other options for newborns as well as info on carrier types in my siggy that you might find helpful.  There's no one best carrier but I would suggest one that provides baby a supportive seat - over time, there's a big difference in comfort for the wearer when baby is properly supported.

  • Oh and as for the question of is a good carrier worth it - absolutely!!  It's the same as the difference in a super cheap stroller and a nicer one - they both get the job done but one is going to be more comfortable for both you and baby.

Thanks! Yeah, the Jeep one is junky. It was free so I've been using it. Im definitly gonna invest in an ergo. I saw one on ebay for $50 new.....hopefully its not a knock off. Thanks again!

  • Unless it's from ergo's authorized ebay seller (which is listed on their website) it's a pretty good chance it's a fake :(  Sadly there are lots of fake ergos out there and they are getting harder to spot.  I wouldn't buy one new unless it was from one of their listed authorized dealers.
  • The Ergo is well worth it. I carry my 2 week old in it and used to carry my now 20 month old in it.

  • Definitely buy from an authorized ergo dealer. I bought what I thought was an ergo carrier on eBay and turns out it was a fake. So don't buy from a seller named marcusmeeks. Still trying to get my money back on that one from almost 3 weeks ago :
  • Yes, it is worth it.  Sell your stroller if you have to.

I started using it around 3 months and did not have the insert.
