I wanted to thank every one of you who took the time to respond to my post a few days ago about switching from an intervention-happy OBGYN to a midwife at a birth center. H and I had our consultation at the birth center today, and we were SO happy with everything. We met with the midwife and her assistant (who is training to become a midwife herself), and she spent over an hour with us giving a tour of the birth center and answering all of our questions. The center itself is very nice, and definitely the calmer/gentler atmosphere I was looking for. I brought up my concerns about the cost (it's $3200 OOP, since our insurance won't cover the birth center), and she once again said that if we were comfortable having her student midwife handle the birth, with the main midwife supervising everything, she would bring the total cost down to $1500 for us. That is definitely do-able, and well worth it IMO. H agreed, and I just feel like this huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I was stressing so much about having to fight for every single little thing with my current OB, and as H quite rightly pointed out, even if I was able to have a med-free birth at this hospital was all that stress really good for our LO? I just feel so much better about everything, and I'm really looking forward to a peaceful, low-intervention birth.
Thank you again, ladies! The support on this board is absolutely wonderful.
