  I think with the iPod touch, you can connect to the internet without a data plan if you are able to connect to a Wifi.  I know a lot of kids/teenagers have them and I'm pretty sure they can even message with other friends (like text messaging).  You can get apps like on the iPhone and play games and it has a camera.  I think it is just the same as an iPhone without the phone capabilities.

  If you are just looking for something wireless to play with apps and get on the internet while in a Wifi hotspot, also check out the Kindle Fire.  My sister has one (doesn't have an iPhone) and she loves it.  Also, she reads a lot so double bonus.  It is bigger than the iPod Touch though which could be good if you want a larger screen, but not as good if you just want it for portability.  I think they are similar price points. No monthly data fees or anything for either.

  But unless you currently pay for Wireless internet at home, its probably not worth it.

  Crash Into Me:

  You cannot text from an ipod touch (unless you have an app, I guess).  It does connect to wireless internet-so either at your home or places like Panera.  You can download all kinds of apps, which you can't do with a regular ipod. DH's touch does not have a camera, but it's possible that newer versions may have one.  Otherwise, it functions like a regular ipod. 
  

  You can text if you are connected to wifi with an app.  I use Text+.  The iPod Touch is a great alternative to a smart phone or even an iphone.  It can get all the same apps and such an iphone can.  4th and 5th Gen iPods do have a camera.  The "Big" difference is you don't have the data plan so you have to have wifi to use most of the apps.  There are some apps like games that you can play on it not connected to wifi and you can listen to your music not connected but 90% of the apps I use do need the internet.  The great thing is almost everywhere you go has wifi, dr. office, mcdonalds and most fast food restaurants, Panera, most people do also.  I use my wifi at most family and friends houses also hooked on their wifi.

  I LOVE my ipod touch but it can get addicting and I have to limit my usage

  It's exactly like an iphone minus the 4g.  My nephew has one and facetimes us all the time.  It's perfect for a toddler.
