FTM here - despite referring people to my registries, I continue to rec. burp cloths as gifts. I currently have 20 that are washed and folded - do I need more? I have a few 4-packs I haven't taken apart so I can return.
All of these are the cotton-type cloths that are also referred to as receiving blankets - they are not fluffy or fuzzy type blankets. I am sure you know what I am talking about.
All input would be appreciated! Also, I am not planning on having another child after this, so I won't be saving any of these things.
Re: Burp cloths/rec. blankets - how many is too many?
Ok Im not understanding- you have 20 burp cloths, but how many receiving blankets?
As far as the burp cloths go- yes, I'd say you have plenty. Either return the other 4packs, or pass them onto others.
And for as receiving blankets- I'd say about 5 is plenty. I could be wayyy off base here, as DD was born in May so I didn't use blankets often during the summer. I personally prefer softer fuzzy blankets though, so I have only 2 receiving blankets from DD (they are gender neutral) that I'll be using again, and the other 3 are fuzzy & fluffy.

I think it depends on how often you want to wash and how much your baby spits up.
We have a ton of burp cloths, but never used them because LO never spit up. We also have a ton of bibs that we never used as well.
I think we have 10 receiving blankets and my mom has knit one for our new baby. The receiving blankets we have are pink but I'm going to use them anyway, he will never know! Lol

I would say 20 burp cloths is plenty.
As far as blankets, even though DS was born in July, we got a ton of those so we will reuse them. Honestly though, DS loved to be swaddled, and we had two that were great for swaddling that we will be using again.
My DD had GERD (really bad reflux) so we went through a lot of burb cloths each day but 20 should be plenty.
I swaddled DD as well. I think I had around 5 recieving blankets and 3 actual swaddle blankets. That seemed to be enough for us.
Haha, my username should read "3Girlsand1BoyMama"...with #5 on the way! (and then we're done.)

my daughter HATED being swaddled, so i ended up using the receiving blankets for burping and spitup. in the beginning we had a really hard time finding a formula that she could tolerate, we went through at least 4 formulas before one finally stopped the projectile spew (tmi)
burp clothes and "cloth diapers" (i was told they are commonly used as spit rags) were simply NOT big enough.
regardless - wat u have seems to be more then enough. unless of course your chld enjoys being swaddled, in which case i suggest trading the extras in for some receiving blankets.
Thanks for the input. The largest number of what I have are technically called "receiving blankets" - they are the 100% cotton flannel. However, after I washed them, some are so small that unless I have a 5 lb baby, they will not be useful for swaddling/blankets. Almost all of them ended up being more rectangular rather than a square. I imagine these will either end up being used in the diaper bag as suggested by a PP, or as a burp cloth.
The cotton interlock burpcloths (actually labeled as such), are the smaller type, and I have about 5 of those.
I plan on CD'ing, so doing laundry will already be on my radar.
I have a small number of blankets that are actually a useful size for swaddling. But regardless, it sounds like I should wait and see if LO likes being swaddled...what I have still packaged I will exchange for something else.
I don't particularly care for using receiving blankets as burp clothes. I think they get TOO big (even the ones that are small) to use. I prefer having separate burp clothes, but go with works for you. And, in that case, it sounds like some of the smaller receiving blankets will work for you, so I would just wait and see.
As for me, I think we have about 5 small actual burp clothes and 5 "fancy" ones. Since I'm going to prefer to use the plain white cloth diapers as burp clothes and I didn't get them off my registry, I'll probably go buy them myself. It's a bad of 20, I think, so we should be set. I just find those cloth diapers are great for all kinds of things. I don't have a ton of receiving blankets. We only received maybe 5 or 6 as gifts and then we have some that are hand-me-downs. Most of our blankets are ones either handmade for us, were mine as a baby (made by family), or the soft, flully types.
(I am a FTM, by the way, but am much older than my youngest siblings, so I know what worked well for us with them, i.e., the cloth diapers as burp clothes.)
I"d say 20 burp cloths is more than plenty, and would probably return the unopened packs or exchange for something else.
I'm also not clear on the receiving blankets. My DD was born in August I had several swaddle blankets I wrapped her in, which she liked. I also had all sorts of thicker blankets I received that didn't get as much use. I will be putting them to use this time around hopefully since weather will be much cooler.
