Water just broke! How long?

My water just broke! I feel fine otherwise and will be timing my contractions.... It was a clear fluid so no meconium. Just curious how long it took from the point of your water breaking to giving birth? I know everyone is different but can I still go a day or two at this point or will it most likely happen within 12 hours??

Re: Water just broke! How long?

  • Did you call your OB? It is many hospitals' policies to deliver within 24 hours of your water breaking, to help curb the risk of infection. Good luck!

  • With DS it was 2 hours and 15 mins from the time my water broke to the time he was delivered.  It goes quick sometimes.  I would contact your Dr to make sure everything is progressing fine and baby is doing ok.  If I hadn't gone tot eh hospital right away DS would have been delivered by my roommate on the sofa.  Good Luck and hopefully Happy Birthday LO!

Most doctors will only let you go  24 hours before they induce to avoid risk of infection. Better get your shimmy on, mama! Good luck! And definitely call your doctor, if you haven't yet.

From water breaking to birth- 4 hours. As PP said, sometimes it moves fast...

I am NOT in the wait around camp, lol. If I would have waited to feel my first contraction, I wouldn't have made it to the hospital- I didn't feel contractions until I had to push.

  • My mom had her kids in under 4 hours from when her water broke; she didn't have any contractions before it broke, either.

I'm different than what the other women here are saying (I want a 100% natural, med-free birth) and won't be going in to the hospital til contractions are at least 5 minutes apart; with or without the water breaking, honestly. Good luck and yay! Baby!!! :D

  • My OB recommends that if your water breaks you go right to the hospital. A lot of doctors won't let you go much past 24 hours after your water has broken before doing a c-section, unless of course you are making progress and close to delivery.
  • My OB has said that if my water breaks head straight to L&D, and go ahead and call in as well.  The longer you wait, the more risk of infection.  Good luck!

That is SO exciting!  definitely give a call to your OB.  As PP said, most hospitals like to deliver w/in 24 hours to avoid the risk of infection.

    GL!!

    This!! Good Luck momma!

This. I had my DS 21 hours after my water broke. They gave me pitocin after 12 hours, because I had made very little progress in the previous 9 hours. Started at 1 cm and 80% when water broke, was 4 cm and 100% by 3 hour mark and then nothing for approximately the next 9-10 hours. Was 8 cm by 17 hours post water break and had DS 4 hours later after 2.5 hours of pushing. He was 7 lb 6 oz.

  • My water broke first with both my kids.  I waited both times (after talking with my caregivers) until my contractions were timable and consistent.  With the first, I still went in to the hospital too early (about 6-7 hours after water breaking) and had to walk the halls, do lunges, squat, and get things going for hours and hours.

With my first it was about 12 hours from water breaking to hard labor (lots of walking, rocking on ball, etc.) and another 12+ hours until the baby was out (actual labor/delivery - not early contractions).

With my second is was about 6 hours from water breaking to baby coming.

Good luck - you're very close.

Two boys already - ages 5 and 3...

  • I delivered 11.5 hours after my water broke. GL!
DS (7 years old) from FET in 2010
DD (5 years old) from IUI in 2012

  • I think it is policy to deliver within 24 hrs to prevent risk of infection.  With my first my water broke at 11 pm, and she arrived the next day at 6 pm.  I had to be induced because my contractions weren't coming.  With my second my water broke at 1 am and he arrived at 5 am - no induction needed.  I would head to the hospital to get checked before too long.

  • 13 hours after my water broke, DD1 had several episodes of fetal distress & I was wheeled in for a c-section.

I called in right when it broke, but took about 30 min to grab a shower & make sure I had all my stuff.  :)

Such an exciting time - good luck!!

  • With my first babe, my water broke and he was born 25 hours later.  I was given pitocin 13ish (? I can't remember now...) hours later because I was not progressing as they would have liked me to.

  • 36 hours after my water breaking my DD was born by emergency c/s. I had antibiotics at 24 hours to prevent infection since I was progressing and got to 10cms. But she wouldnt fit and they took her by c/s.

  • Lurking.  My water broke at noon on a Thursday.  OB said to get to hospital by 4 pm.  We got there around 3.  DD was born on Friday at 5:30 via c/s for failure to progress.  Contractions started about 2 hours after my water broke.
  • My OB told me if my water breaks to call L&D immediately as they would want me to come in. From the paperwork they've give me "generic handout" it seems like once your water breaks they set a time limit. I would call your OB if you haven't already.

  • I would call the doctor, but until your contractions get closer I wouldnt be too concerned.  Yes, most hospitals and doctors want to deliver within 24 hours, but if you do your research it has nothing to do with infection.  It is purely because birth is a money making business and they want to get you going and out of there.  The risk of infection actually only goes up about half a percent.  Anyways, happy pushing!! You will do great!
  • With DS2 I was having no contractions when my water broke and DS was born 4 hours later.
  • My first two, 2 hours later. I just had my third, and went from pretty much nothing, to water breaking and baby coming out 45 minutes later. It was an instant kick start for all three pregnancies. GL!

  • My doctors told me to come in when contrax were 3 minutes apart or after 12 hours. I came in after 12 hours with minimal contrax. They told me that they no longer follow the "baby must come out within 24 hours of water breaking" rule but they avoided internals and kept an eye on my temp.

Since I wasn't contracting much they gave me pitocin and DD arrived a few hours later!

    Good luck!
